I give up... what did I plant?

So, I have this shrub I planted a few years ago and can't for the life of me remember what it is. Looked back through my records and can't find it. I keep having this vague recollection that it is a laurel, but I just don't know - google searches show laurels that grow to 3 feet and some that grow to 20, and I wouldn't have bought something of either of that size for this spot. But I still keep coming back to laurel of some sort... This shrub is about 3-4 years old and rather slow growing - about 2 feet tall right now.

Also, can anyone identify that... thing... that's on there? Looks to be some kind of gall. Do I need to do something about it?

I agree it looks like cherry laurel, Prunus laurocerasus. There are a number of dwarf or compact cultivars on the market, the smallest arguably 'Mt. Vernon', which would be unusual to exceed 3'even after many years.

1--The bad news is that the local postmaster who has been so helpful in the past is no longer there. He is no longer employed by the USPS....sigh 2--This AM I called about making an appointment with the person in charge. I spoke with the 'officer in charge'. When I asked his name, he gave me his first name, and would not give me his last name. Why would he have refused me that info? 3--I explained that I had several padded mailers that I had received in and they were unopened, and the customers who had sent them had been overcharged. I was wanting to bring them in, and have him (or anyone for that matter) inspect them and determine that they had indeed been overcharged. I explained that I then wanted a signed piece of paper saying that they were overcharged. He said he could not help me and gave me the telephone number of Consumer Affairs in Louisville. Well, I know from talking to someone down there a while back that there was at that time no Consumer Affairs Manager and that NO ONE was even an acting manager. gggrrrrrrrr........ 4--This week I received in a bubblie from Williamsport OH 46134 that was overcharged. It weighed .7 OZ yet was charged $1.05, which is for a 2 OZ large envelope. That means that either the clerk failed to weigh it, or else their scale needs calibration, thus is overcharging a lot of customers. I got a tel# for that PO, and when I called it, I get a non working # recording.........ggggrrrrrrr.........shot down on getting that done. 5--I was on the phone probably 30 minutes or so this AM with the USPS complaint #, getting 3 separate complaints filed. I have the confirmation numbers on all 3 of them and someone is supposed to call me back within 2 business days. Yeah right. I'm not holding my breath on that one. On the one report that was filed for overcharge, I have asked that the overcharge be sent to me. I wonder how they are going to handle that. shall I go on? Anyway, I this AM I learned about Restricted Delivery. Below is the info on that. Restricted Delivery Be sure your mail gets into the right hands. When you want your mail to reach a specific recipient, use Restricted Delivery. Sometimes, you might have private or highly classified documents that you require to be seen only by the addressee. Restricted Delivery ensures that your mail is only delivered to the person you specify, or to the person authorized in writing to sign for intended recipient. I just checked and the cost on a 13 OZ First Class Parcel, sent Certified, with Restricted Delivery signature and signed receipt of the person that accepted it being sent back to me would be less than $11. The exact amount escapes me now. What a bargain, huh, if the Parcel gets to someone who does their job? I have started to compose my letter to The Honorable John E. Potter..but will have to abandon that until I am feeling better. Postmaster General U.S. Postal Service 475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW Washington, DC 20260-0010 I also found an email address for him this AM, not that anyone would even really read any of the complaint emails and actually respond. I found the addy at the Answers.com site, so don't put much faith in it being up to date or valid. E-mail: pmgceo@usps.gov Light bulb moment. I can try taking in the overcharged envelopes, (one at a time might be best) along with an email from the member who sent them and they can authorize me to file for and collect the overcharged amount. I would think that would generate paperwork and that paperwork could then be used as additional evidence (proof) of the 2 year 9 month old problems of post offices across the US overcharging.

I think a lot of plants have the most energy right when they start to spring back to life this time of year. That you can do all sorts of torture to them now and they will recover just fine because they are so pumped up and actively growing. But there is this touchy period when digging and dividing or potting up upsets the balance. There is basically no way to determine when that magic moment is - so I say, if the sprouts look healthy go ahead and dig and pot up. If the plant looks weak, leave it alone unless you would rather go ahead and replace it. In my fruit area I have plenty of doubled up plants, because I thought one was dying so I cut it back and planted a new one only to have the original plant return later and now I have two of them growing side by side (when they get bigger, one of them will have to go).

DL I hope you have room to leave the pole beans in place so they can do their thing a little later on. My beans and tomatoes have begun to pick back up -- our weather cooled a great deal last week and looks to continue that way for at least a week or more. Since we're south of you, I thought maybe the cooling streak would head your way, too. Our nighttime temps are in the low sixties now, daytimes in the high 80s, not bad for early July!

Ken, the introduced Asian Mantis is destructive to our natural ecosystems is definitely not beneficial! They should be destroyed. They eat our native Carolina Mantis.

Hmm, I guess the good thing is maybe my memory is better than I thought if it is a laurel. The bad thing is why would I plant something like this? I did a quick google search and there's not many dwarf cultivars out there. Perhaps an Otto Luyken... At least I hope it's a dwarf because there's no way I can have anything bigger here. Guess time will tell...

I just recently read a thread here about praying mantises and was surprised to hear that they are not beneficial, after hearing since I was a kid that they are.

Doesn’t look right for Otto Luyken imo. That has narrower, more pointed and darker leaves.

There are numerous cultivars of Prunus laurocerasus. Sometimes they can be difficult to tell apart from just a few photos. Although zone 6 does rule out many.

You need to look up the difference between a native Carolina Mantis egg sac and the Asian species. Please DO NOT DESTROY until you CONFIRM the species.

I have only found the Asian in my yard but I can't tell from the angle of your photo.

I'm not happy when I come across any species of mantis in my gardens. They devour the bees, butterflies, and other benefical insects far more than they help keep the pests under control.

Hmm, I just don't know. I've spent some time looking up cherry laurels and it seems most cultivars are well over ten feet. The only shorter ones are Marbled Dragon, which being variegated I can rule out, Mount Vernon, which would be too short, and Nana or Otto Luyken. Possibly Schipkaenis (or one of it's endless name variations lol) but the descriptions of this are so varied, with heights ranging from 4 to 12 feet, that I don't think I would have chosen this cultivar. Geez, even Compacta gets 8-10 feet tall. I'm building a shrub border here with shrubs about 5-6 feet tall so I would have chosen accordingly (well, to the best of my ability to know how big a shrub will grow lol). So that brings me to Otto Luyken (but I trust floral on this one!) or Nana, from what I've found so far. I also would have gotten it at a nursery that carries common specimens, nothing fancy, unusual, or uncommon, so that narrows it too.

I'm debating whether I want to dig around at the base of this and see if there's a tag buried. Well, I really don't want to, lol, but perhaps I should. I've got records of plants I bought in 1998 but can't find the receipt from this 3-4 year old shrub lol. Sigh...

Thanks for the help. At least I know it's a cherry laurel. Feel free to throw out ideas of other cultivars if there are any!

'Majestic Jade' is another variety we sometimes see down here in Virginia. Slightly larger than Otto Luyken. 'Zabeliana' is another variety. But yours is not Zabeliana nor Mount Vernon.
