Remodeling Windows Design Dilemma

Asymmetrical Exterior

Hello! We are renovating our home (staying in existing footprint) and adding a master bath room. The location of the shower would require us to either remove the large window , or have a large awkward window IN THE shower (facing the street, not really an option). Obviously I would like to remove the window, however that will throw off the exterior symmetry of the house. The first floor will already be asymmetrical (I’m OK with that)but having both floors looks bad. Any ideas?

I must also note that due to FEMA and town regulations we are VERY limited to the amount of money we’re allowed to spend on the renovations which has caused us to keep existing

These houses were designed to sort of blend into their woodsy settings -- the muted greens and browns that have been suggested are really in keeping with that, while this cream and dark brown is jarring in contrast. I suggest not messing with the brick lest you make it completely beyond the reach of any future owner who might actually like this style of architecture (painting brick is forever!). I know it's hard to buy a house you don't love, so I'm glad you've found ways to make it feel more like home. I hope some of the discussion here has given you ideas you can use. I sure envy your woods! :)

“Nice landscaping . . . Does anyone have any suggestions?” Jean, on Sunday 12/30, Yardvaark made a request for a set of photos taken closer in from just inside the yard, from one spot opposite the front door, that spans across the whole yard from one side bound to the other. Can you add that so we see the whole span of the front yard? Landscaping isn’t just in front of the house and this photo is a bit too far away for useful landscaping suggestions. For instance, is there a bed between the house and the steps to the left of the door and if so, how deep is it front to back? How is the drive positioned?

If you found the right columnar, narrow tree and put it to the left of your stoop, you'd reduce tthe impact of the assymetry. You'd want something that isn't going to get too big for the spot, but will rise at least a bit above the first floor. Your landscaping isn't symmetrical, so this would totally work.

Asymmetrical Windows & Enclosed Entryway

My husband and I recently bought this house (built in 1948) and are planning to move in later this summer. Location is superb but…the house is in need of an intervention. I didn’t notice this as much before we bought the house, but the exterior windows are misaligned, the top windows are larger than the bottom ones, and the brick enclosed entryway/ portico (added on in the 50s) is off-center. I know it’s not a simple job, but I’d love to widen the bottom windows. Should we knock down the enclosed entryway/portico and make it an open one? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

The left photo is the proposed look. The issue is losing the top right window all together.

It is a 90 yr old cottage so its already very quirky . That, with our limitations from the town, makes the symmetry design tough! I am OK with a little asymmetry but want to preserve as much as possible

I can’t tell from what you posted. Do you have a “before” layout and a proposed upstairs layout?

Please clarify--is the window to be lost on the second floor or first floor? Please submit a floor plan that is large enough that we can see the details.
