Thoughts on fridge placement

We're currently redoing our kitchen and I could use some advice on fridge placement.

Our current planned layout looks like this:

The planned fridge location is marked by the blue arrow. It's embedded within a pantry area and we're creating a coat closet behind the fridge that opens up on the other side, which is the foyer. To the right of the fridge (our right looking at the floor plan from above) is an L-shaped pantry.

I've been thinking about whether to move the fridge over to the other side of the pantry where the red circle is. If we do that, then we can scrap the coat closet and just make the entire pantry a rectangular pantry that encompasses the current planned fridge location and coat closet location. The coat closet isn't that important to us either way.

Any thoughts on which fridge location would be better?

My thoughts were that if we stay with the current plan, the fridge is more centrally located within the kitchen and next to the kitchen island/closer to the dining extension on the island, which could be convenient when taking things in and out of the fridge. However, our pantry is an L-shape, which to me seems a bit weird and feels like an inefficient use of space.

On the other hand, if we move the fridge to the red circle, we get a larger normal shaped pantry, which I like. However, I'm wary of putting the fridge in the corner of the kitchen like that. Initially I didn't like that idea because I was afraid of blocking the walkway from the dining room and also that area feeling too crowded. But I realized that the amount of walkway blockage is probably relatively similar in both areas and since we're opening up the wall behind the stove, it won't feel as crowded. And I'm not sure whether the fridge in the corner is a good thing (closer to the stove) or a bad thing (less central, not as adjacent to the island, possibly would feel like more walkway blockage). We're also scrapping the bar chairs next to the stove if that matters.

Any thoughts on which choice would be better would be appreciated!

I dont think I'd create almost nine feet of pantry space if this were my space......[the big rectangle that would ensue]. I have a smaller pantry and its enough.... so by leaving the fridge and retaining the closet behind it ...could you also make the red circled area a little closet from the room behind as well. Or put some counter there as a landing when coming from dining room..setting out food as well. If you feel the almost nine feet of pantry is a big advantage then work with that and move fridge. You have perhaps a scaled back minimalistic plan as far as useable cabinets altho drawers are terrific and hopefully you have done the requisite work about storage needs. Probably the logical impulse is to say to move the fridge and have the bigger easier pantry for access. so I'd lean that way because this is not my space and you obviously have a destination with various seating areas and storage can't be overlooked .....but evaluate your circumstances and heed that bigger isnt always better. I'm looking at this in terms of pantry configuration in other words. The aisle is generous...from standpoint of fridge I think either spot is okay.

Your island is a barrier between the fridge and sinks. Can you put the closet to the right (as we see the plan) and the pantry to the left? Moving the fridge over will take a step or two off the prep path, and would give you a straight shot to the secondary prep space between the main sink and range. Speaking of which, I'd move the DW to the left of the clean-up sink, and store dishes in drawers to the left. Add a pull-out pantry or ROTS to the left of the fridge (as you face it) to keep it from being stuck in the corner.

I'm going through a fridge quandary myself. I have a French door in our temporary house and I can tell you that having landing space in front is vital. If you don't have this, I suggest crossing FD off the list. I'm looking at a KA single door without water or ice in the door. Both are located inside though. And interior useable space is one of my biggest issues. I'm surprised how many non-36" fridges there are. Most are less. You'd need a bit of air circulation space on the sides anyway so maybe the extra space won't show from the model you like. Could maybe place a huge piece of cardboard or the like up in the dimension you are considering to see how bad it would really look?

That was my concern, that you'd have to hike to the pantry for lots of food items for each meal. It'd be different if the pantry was for overflow and you were refilling your kitchen cabinets from there. For instance, we do some canning. Some of those jars of food are in "deep storage" since we only need to replenish from there occasionally. Even so, I need a convenient spot for the empty jars, too. (And I still haven't figured out where that spot is yet in my own kitchen.) In our kitchen now, I have a 30" upper cupboard to the left of the stove that holds dry goods like rice and beans. The 30" upper to the right of the stove holds oils and vinegars, pastas, boxes of broth, and large containers of spices that won't fit in my spice drawers, which are below my cooktop and right next to it. I keep my onions and garlic in my corner cabinet since I use these nearly every day. In my baking area, near the stove, I have canisters of flour, sugar, brown sugar, and jars that hold baking soda, powder, salt, etc. These are all things I use frequently (well, the dried beans not so much) and I want them at the point of use. In my pantry is where I put stuff I don't need quite as often, or the things that are too bulky and awkward to store anywhere else. Canned goods, potatoes, extra ketchup and mustard, spaghetti sauce, ice cream cones, cereals/homemade granola, bulk bins for my 50 lb containers of wheat berries, oats, rice, pitchers, coffee makers, extra crockpots, etc. I feel for your dilemma. I'd love for my kitchen to be cockpit style, with everything within a step's reach, yet I have a lot more stuff that needs to be stored than will fit within my arms' lengths. (I have short arms, which doesn't help any. ; ))

Thanks for the comment on seating height. Maybe it is really remodeling for retirement, which is still 8-10 years off, vs a full on aging in place never leave plan. I don't want to have to move because of something we could have planned for. I want to be smart - one level living, wider doors, curb less shower but am not sure I'll let it dictate things that we wouldn't have to move over (when I have a strong opinion on how I want it that conflicts). We have been through it all with our own parents so I'm fully aware - my parents had to move due to stairs and no way to live on one level in their house - and both our mothers ended up in wheelchairs and assisted living my Mom is not basically bed bound and cannot even feed himself -- my Dad is a healthy 89 and says the counter stools are fine for him (preferred not bar height but could still do it). If things got bad for both of us we would likely go to a care facility (have long term care insurance). But one healthy and one well but in a wheelchair or both a bit stiff and limited and not wanting to go up the stairs anymore - then I'd want to stay. OK with not sitting at the island if cannot (bathroom is my next focus where the debate is open space under the vanity or not - I don't love the look but that isn't as hard to change later as the shower - grab bars I'll do now as they might prevent a fall and I don't mind them vs block for them an add later our architect suggested). For now I prefer counter height for view (not having higher island to have to look over) and a better perch for people talking to me while I cook. We have the dinning table a few feet away where someone in a wheelchair could sit so not a move forcing issue. Could even be lowered later if planned for right.

This layout would improve from being posted on the kitchen forum with a layout of the whole floor with more measurements. Plenty of good feedback for this question. It'd be nice if it was larger when clicked on. I'd recess it into the pantry space as part of that short counter so you get a flush front without going counter depth. CD still sticks out 3-6 inches with the handles anyway. Single bowl sink could be offset from back to back with the cooktop, for which I'd suggest induction. When you figure aisle space the counters stick out past the cabs by 1" to 1-1/2" for each side. The lighting plan has no task lighting over the work areas.

Wow, how rude! You don't know that she isn't already working with a real kitchen designer, and you don't know whether there are "too many issues" or not.

It never fails to amaze me how many so-called pros on Houzz are so totally unprofessional.

I think you're right to move the fridge, because it will be closer to the prep sink and cooking area, which is where you'll need ingredients. I am envious of a pantry that large.

What is the window/seating situation? Looks awkward and expensive. The refrigerator would be best to the left of the sink, with a single glass door to the left of it.

I don't think the refrigerator is in a good relationship with the rest of the kitchen workspace in its current location, it would be better in the location you have circled.
