Full home reno with contractor. Bad idea to do some rooms myself?

I'm doing a head to toe renovation of my house, and I've hired a contractor. They seem great so far, but we're only in the initial planning stages and things are moving slow during these covid times, so I have a lot of time to think and browse.

My house will have some re-modeling done, but for the most part it'll be a cosmetic upgrade. Flooring, fixtures, cabinetry, lighting, etc.

We're starting with a designer to have everything matching together.

But there are certain projects that I feel like I can go to a company myself and not need to pay the contractor's commission. For example the big walk-in closet. There's a company specializing in that I've found on Google. What would be the pros and cons of just contacting them myself and using their design team for that project?

Or would this be a major faux pas and I'd be way over my head, and I should have the contractor do the whole house and not worry so much about the commission?

Thanks.
