I think you can easily have a MCM vibe without going full on MCM. If that is a rel plant great if not it has to go no fake plants anywhere . I need to see the whole space there is no way to help without context . This is my living room in our MCM ranch it is really not MCM full on but has some elements of MCM. So post more pics of the space and give us some idea of your budget.

Upate: I removed my'matchy' loveseat/sofa and purchased a midcentury-styled sofa(on sale!) and new area rug. I replaced the loveseat with 2 chairs which have a modern design. Very frugal changes which have changed the room mood for me!

What a huge difference! With the new furniture the room looks larger. Very nice job.

This looks more like an office than a home living room.

You need a proper coffee table or a large ottoman with a tray on top, a couple throw pillows on the sofa, art over the sofa, and end table between the two chairs.

Once the coffee table is placed, you may need to move the chairs back, in which case your area rug may be too small.

Your animal sculpture is nice, but it may feel creepy to have it immediately over ones head when one is sitting in that end chair. You might want to move it further away.

I am planning to get an end table for the 2 chairs...

The very small coffee table keeps the small living room clear for movement. I actually like it's small size because I've visited many living rooms that are crowded by a large coffee tables(and you can't walk around the room)!

The 2 plastic chairs are temporary and will be eventually replaced with upholstered pieces. I think that's where you get the 'office vibe' because they are actually cheap, stackable chairs from a big box! I just like the modern design they have. My first version of a mcm living room ... so fun!

Forgot to mention good job on the paint design.

Thank you , my cousin, a professional painter, did it in the 80's to fill up the large space. Could you suggest ideas for accent chairs/sidetable to eventually replace the white chairs?

Not a pro. I actually like the white chairs but understand they are not long term.

I caught another furniture sale and got 2 chairs...now i'm feeling that I will need to get a larger rug and resize it to cover more floor.

You’ve done a really beautiful job with your space. The red sofas you had before were very nice, too. But for the MCM type style you are aiming for, you have made great choices.👌🏼

You could try just centering your current rug a bit more, along these lines:

Or you could try just placing your current rug on a diagonal.

If you prefer a larger rug, here are a few views. I added a floor lamp in a couple of them, in case you could use an additional lamp.

Update: I got an 8 by 10 rug and cut it down to the length of the sofa. I decided that my 3 colors are mostly teal, gray and tan ( I love how the rug contains shades of those colors and texture) Now my furniture legs rest on the rug. I pulled the chairs out and the room actually feels larger to me because of the leggy furniture exposes more floor. An amazing result. My previous solid furniture was shoved against the wall.

I added a lamp and more art, moved the sculpture to the window to echo the fan placement. The light from the windows creates silhouettes bringing attention to the interesting structures 24/7.

I took my vintage Josephine Baker poster off the floor and made her the star of this room!

I decided upon a small side table and stool instead of coffee table to keep the room open for movement.

Thanks for all the helpful, expert advice...my room now gives me a unique, fresh energy with a funky vibe, not trendy theme.The room even has good feng shui...which was totally by accident! This room may not follow all the design rules, but it gives me such enjoyment...again. Houzz is such a great place to refine your style.
