Tired 'Rising Sun' redbud trees

Oriole 6

I'm in the market for a Rising Sun redbud. I finally saw a few 'in person' today at a nursery in 15 and 30-gallon pots. They were less than impressive, with dry, wind-torn and dappled with what-looks-like-a-disease leaves. The nursery person is telling me it's because "they don't like to be in pots". I mean, I guess I could expect some damage at the end of a long, hot, summer... And these trees weren't getting any shady relief in the afternoon... For those of you who have these trees in the ground, is it normal for this cultivar to look this way at this time of year, or is she right with the "hated pot" thing?
