Joint between corian counter and unglazed tile backsplash wall
Comments (6)"Which should I use on the corian/tile backsplash junction: silicone or water-based caulk? " If the area is silicone contaminated you likely have little choice but to use silicone, but even then you need to get the area as clean as possible. Naphtha seems to work better than other solvents. If you get the silicone level low enough new silicone caulk should work fine. Its chief drawbacks are being a PITA to apply and clean up, a limited number of colors, and it is not paintable (not an issue in this application). I have noticed a lot of poorly done tile joints lately. Wall tiles sitting tight on counters leaving no real space for caulk. Bathrooms seem to be even worse. Wall tiles so tight against the floor of the shower you can only make a large cove of caulk instead of a narrower joint that is less prone to damage from cleaning (leading to the inevitable leaks)....See Moregranite counter-top seams ... are we being too picky?
Comments (44)These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens....See MoreWhat to use at joint between countertop and backsplash?
Comments (6)You want to caulk that joint, not grout it. Any change of plane, like counter to backsplash, counter to cabinets, etc. should be caulked to seal it from moisture. Caulk should remain flexible, if there is any movement in either surface. Grout used there could crack over time and you lose your moisture seal. For our last two backsplashes, I used caulk that was color matched to the grout that we used. Since our grout was sanded in both instances, we got the sanded version of the caulk. This was available at the tile store that we got the grout from. When it is all done, you should not easily notice the difference between the caulk and the grout....See MoreOpinions needed on Corian counter + backsplash in 1945 fixer
Comments (18)palimpsest, For the past few hours I've been staring at Wilsonart's SOLICOR color Calcutta Marble, but I have discovered that the "Solicore" feature appears to be a fiction. Wilsonart's website states: "Wilsonart® SOLICOR™ is a specialty laminate created with a solid color core that lets you design visually crisp and stunning spaces by eliminating the disruptive brown line at the edges." This photo clearly shows that Calcutta Marble color is not solid all the way through, even though their website says it is, and edges do in fact show brown lines: Flat cut showing ugly brown lines. Flat cut showing ugly brown lines. Formica also has the "COLOR2CORE" but it's a lie also. Their website says: "Classic flat edge. Your laminate countertops will have the traditional 90-degree flat edges that show a brown line between the top sheet and the edge. The exception to this is solid core laminate that has color throughout, like COLORCORE®2 by Formica Group. You’ll still have the flat edge, but no brown line." I have found images on their website that they use to illustrate a lack of brown edge but it's still there. This link has a section "ColorCore®2 Color-Through Laminate Patterns" and a picture of a large white counter to the right which clearly shows brown lines. On the other hand, apparently it's possible somehow to eliminate the brown lines because this picture from Houzz claims to use an edge called "Aegean" which does not show any brown lines, but I can't find anything about that edge on Formica's website....See MoreSuki Mom
