Brick the entire wall, and get rid of the hearth. I don't like how the hearth doesn't meet up with the brick across the lower part of the fireplace wall.

Put a candelabra with candles inside.

Get large baskets to flank the sides.

A large wooden shelf place various paintings or photos.

I would remove it it does not function and even if it did it is in a really weird spot no matter how you decorate it will always be a weird FP that does not work.

If you want it for the texture and history, maybe you could remove the raised hearth and use those bricks to fill in the firebox and add brick into the corner, and then also possibly add brick up to the vaulted part of the ceiling and then paint it because you will not get a great match from the bricks.

We do want a wood stove but not an open fireplace... and the wood stove doesn't need to be in this spot.

Suggest removing the hearth; it’s visually and physically awkward and potentially a tripping hazard. I’d add a floor tile that stretches the width of fireplace and is level with the flooring. Given your furniture, I’d more head modern, with an uncluttered feel.

A wood stove needs to be in a space where air movement moves the heat into the surrounding spaces that is not a good spot for a wood staove and to be honest it might have been original but with all the renovations it just is IMO not worth playing with.

Carefully remove bricks and create raised flower beds or line paths for historical sentiments. The fireplace is a design oops and needs to go.

12" wide canopy for wonderful metal globes... the multiples, the varying metal finishes could be good. And good with brick even with imperfect lines - has a 'spare' appearance as you say... so a single hanging light wouldn't help that.
