Thanks to one and all; I appreciate all the ideas. We are going with a retractable screen, which ever door we choose. I really like, and need, the PetScreen option, especially for the screens for the front two casement side windows. Lukkiirish - Can you tell me why your are only "fairly happy" with your retractable screen storm door? I'm hoping for "ecstatically happy!" LOL VicsGirl, You too sweet with your comments on my Little House of Horrors on the Prairie. The gardens are still "in progress, and the right-hand part won't be planted this year. DH just dumped a trailer load of horse stable compost and freshly cut grass all over it. I'm smoothing it out, watering, and letting it settle before putting some of my perennials in this fall. PammyFay, the glass in this door has five (or seven?) different textures and patterns of 'clear' glass. The metal is a dark grey, and the three "tulip blossoms" are the most beautiful, dark red with a wavy, watery texture. If the sections of glass under the tulips had been dark green it would be beyond perfect! The glass is 90-95% opaque, but the sunlight coming through it is so fractured and intense it's nearly impossible to photograph. The window is very sparkly! The siding is steel, and bomb proof. Ugly, but strong. It's too sturdy to consider replacing with something that wouldn't be as tough. We have toyed with the idea of painting it. IF we do paint, or re-side, the house would be a pale sage green, or a rich tan. We picked the roof and door to go with either color if we stay here long enough to change it. DH built the deck when we needed to replace the front steps. He chose everything and especially wanted the floor boards set at the 45-degree angles and the black railings. I wanted it 8' wide. These photos makes the door and red glass look darker than they are, but you get the idea of the glass textures. This particular glass style has been discontinued. Garden in progress, the borders are subject to rearrangement, again, maybe. The raised garden on the south (left) side of the house is 8' wide and 23" long.

I want to thank everyone for the useful information you've shared. It's given me several things to think about. I am going to try to make this my last set of questions and "what ifs" about the storm door. Since I have to order it by Friday, I will be able to draw a line under it and live with my choice! The "full length door," #906, does not have removable glass. It does not have an interchangeable full-length screen. That section does not have any screening. This circumvents the weight, clumsiness, and hard-to-clean issues. I would stand on the deck to clean the outside of the door. I would never be wrestling a double paned section of glass that is bigger than I am. The hardware/closer for this door is an upgraded, heavy-duty style. Now as to the heat build up problem. While the main glass is stationary, the door does have ventilation. The very bottom section, shown below, is a 4-inch x 30-inch double-paned panel that can be replaced in the summer with the 4"x30" screened panel. There are locking tabs that are used to seal, remove, or replace these short panels as needed. Also, on the inside top of the storm door there is a 1.5" x 30" ventilation grill that can be opened or closed as needed. The theory is the cooler air will vent into the 4x30 gap at the bottom of the door and the hotter air will vent out at the top. Do you think this would be enough of an air-exchange to keep the heat between the two doors at an acceptable level? No matter which storm door I choose, I will not be able to open the main door until after 12:00 noon. The door(s) face due east. The sunlight blasts the front of my house from sunrise until noon. From then on, it's shady. For the real cross ventilation, there are two large casement windows on either side of the picture window. They are easy to open and close. Between them and the 4x30 screen panel I would be able to hear the birds and smell the flowers very easily. PatriceNY - I agree with the idea of "...love being able to open the front door to strangers, and still have a locked door between us..." I know people that will just walk right in when the single front door is opened. I want a locked storm door, too. Want to retire - did - that is terrible that you couldn't take the screen off for cleaning. I would not like that either. Shades - I'm sorry, but I had to roar with laughter over the thought of your dog "biting" the door. My two boys are wild, but they've never bitten a door or glass pane. They lunge, jump, and "dig" at the large window when they are incensed at the sight of a stray cat, SQUIRREL, school bus, SQUIRREL, meandering kids, SQUIRREL, blowing bit of plastic, or SQUIRRELs! The boys are as tall as I am, so their feet can reach far higher than even the lower panel on #801. I can circumvent their attacks 95% of the time with a stern "Leave it !" if I'm in the room. Still there are times I'm elsewhere and don't hear the brief warning snarls. This photo above shows the 4-inch tall screened or glass replaceable panel at the bottom of the door. The photo below shows the 1.5x30 ventilation bar at the top of the inside frame. This bar can be "open" for air flow or "closed" for winter.

Your school system certainly has more relaxed rules concerning drop off/pickup of a child. My town mandates a parent/caretaker be outside, at the bus stop with the child, for pick-up and drop off….no exceptions. If it is pouring, the driver will wait the extra minutes necessary to allow both parent and child to approach the bus. The adult must accompany the child to the bus. As for your door, I like a full view door. A new ,properly installed, door will need no storm. We had a screen door made for the summer, easy on/easy off, with the wood painted the same color as the door. Or: a full view door with sidelights. You new door examples show sidelights, but I don’t see sidelights in your photo.
