Comments (37)Thanks for all the kind words! GW was a great resource all the way through the planning and then the "doing"! Just a couple examples - until I posted a question about which mullions I should choose for glass front cabinets, it never had occurred to me that I had far more choices than plain glass. Now every time I open my cabinets, I smile - I do love the river ice! And because I had always had them, I started my plan with lower cabinets but thanks to GW I changed to all drawers. I love having all my pots, pans, mixing bowls, and small appliances in deep drawers. No more pulling everything out to get the one thing in the back. When we were house hunting, I dreamed of a huge eat-in kitchen with an antique butcher block, but I'm really enjoying cooking in this cozy space with everything so close at hand. mabeldingeldine: We're not Mainers, we just wish we were! We take a trip to the mid-coast area every summer. We got married there and got the Common Ground poster that year - it was also the perfect addition to my kitchen chicken collection! t-bird: Getting the Scherr's doors didn't save any money but I was able to get exactly what I wanted - I just didn't love the finish/materials on any of the white Ikea doors. I posted a breakdown of my costs on the "Under $20k Kitchens thread". I've still got some little paint touch-ups to do, and I need to put some trim where the backsplash ends but it's so nice to have a kitchen that really works. Comments (10)Deee...it's difficult to give concrete advice without more information about you and your family, the space you have to work with, and the surrounding rooms. If you could post a floor plan and answer some questions, I think you will get more help. For information on asking for layout help, see the link below. I'm not putting you off, it's just that without enough information it's difficult to advise you. Good luck & keep posting! +++++ From the "Read Me" Thread +++++ The following thread contains the information we need to help you find a layout that works for you and your family as well as how to draw up and label a floor plan. Asking for Layout Help What are zones and how do you design with them in mind? What are zones and how do you design with them in mind? A piece of advice: When you post a layout for comments, please do not take the comments you receive personally. Everyone here is trying to help, not criticize maliciously. We want you to have a kitchen that, in the end, functions wonderfully well and looks nice overall. This may mean that some of us may tear apart your layout and rebuild it to what we think will work better, but it's done with good intentions. We're not the best at just "validating" someones layout, we're best at critiquing! I will warn you that most of us here are "function over form" (or "function first")...meaning we strive first for a functional layout and then fit the form or look around it. It is far easier to make a functional kitchen look nice than it is to make a nice looking but dysfunctional kitchen functional. So, if you are a form/looks over function person, be sure to state that when you post. Some people here think "function over form" means that we want all kitchens to look the same....not true! What we do want is all kitchens to function well...which means that in 99% of the cases, the workflow is the same...so that will mean some similarities due to workflow. However, as each kitchen is unique, each will have its own unique quirks, etc. In the end, remember this is your kitchen. You don't have to make any of the recommended changes if you don't want to! [Note: If you're just posting for validation of your layout (i.e., you don't want comments that suggest changes), state that as well. If you don't, people will comment on it! Warning: People may comment anyway, it's tough to let a kitchen go that you think is dysfunctional and will cause angst later...especially if it's not yet installed and we think we can help. Bear with us, we're just trying to help!] Here is a link that might be useful: New To Kitchens? Posting Pics? Read Me!...See Morecheck out my before and (almost) after pics of my home's exterior
Comments (37)Thank you justgotabeme! It is true, we find ourselves in the FRONT of the house quite often! The first evening, we poured cocktails and just sat out front and stared. We are very pleased! CEfreeman-Ohhh, what a long, peaceful country driveway that is! I wouldn't want it to look too "maintained!" Hi Lyfia! I posted quite awhile ago, I was very gung ho on the faux wood grain...as a matter of fact, I wanted to do a faux carriage door look, adding the rustic hardware. Most people were against it...and this was when I was planning on painting my house a dark color. Now that my house is so light, I don't want a big dark expanse that takes up such a huge chunk of the front. If my house were bigger, or the paint darker,I would consider it. I do love that look, just not for this house at this time. birdlover-yes, we are thinking two big black pots on either side of the arch...and maybe on the far side of the garage...with bougainvilla or some flowering vine set on a trellis just a bit off from the house walls so they don't actually grow on the walls! The reason we are thinking black pots is...when you drive to our house, you first see the south side of it...with a row of windows with black awnings over each window. So we feel the big black pots will tie the side and the front together. lukkiriish-thank you, I just love those california spanish homes! Thanks for comparing my home to one of those! Ok, again, I really appreciate every single comment. It has been so much work and money and as much as my hubby and I enjoy it, it is nice to see it be well received here!...See MoreMy kitchen---Finally- Before and (almost) after
Comments (52)Donna- the pantry was the existing one there- a closet with wire shelves. Size wise it's great- we keep thinking about putting in better shelving (there is also shelving on the doors) but since it's functional and behind closed doors.. it hasn't been a priority. So it's just shelves going from one wall to the other. The shelves are 18 inches deep but the closet itself is 25 if that makes sense....See MoreRelated Professionals
