Kitchen Sink Clog

Joe Fisherman

I have a GE garbage disposal. The model is GFC530V.

My washing machine is right next to my kitchen sink. When I use the washer water starts filling up in my kitchen sink.

When I switch my disposal on it seems to turn fine. But it does not drain the water immediately.

After a number of hours the water drains out of the sink completely..

The first time I noticed that there was a clog was like 2 months ago. I saw a YouTube video that recommended using a plunger as a first step. I did this and the clog cleared up.

But the clog has returned. I tried the plunger again but this time it did not work.

I saw some videos that suggested using an Allen wrench at the bottom of the disposal. But I don't think mine has a spot for an Allen wrench. Instead, there seems to be screw in cap.

I called GE and they said that I should try removing the disposal elbow and see whether there's anything clogging it. The elbow seems to be attached with 2 screws.

Before I do this I just wanted to check with this forum. Does this sound right or is there something else I can try? I'm including a photo of the disposal below.
