Flooring Design Dilemma

Size of shoe molding to use with 6" baseboards

Installing 6 inch baseboards with vinyl plank floor. I don't want shoe molding or quarter round at all, but will probably have to install. I believe " normal" molding is considered 3/4 inches. Since I'm going with 6 in baseboards, wondering it there is a recommended size of molding to match or look appropriate , I'm wanting a contemporary/clean look. I see there is 11/16 inch molding - would that look off with a 6" baseboard?

Also, should the half bathroom (toilet & vanity) get the 6 inch baseboards or keep the 3" ones that are there? Thinking the 6" baseboards will make room look smaller?

None. Just scribe the 1 x 6 to the floor, skip any shoe completely - its very unnecessary. Keep the same size/profile clean........everywhere. Bath included as below........where yes, it's a simple 1 x 6 and scribe, everywhere.

I don't like the shoe molding. In my old house I didn't have it. In our new one we have the shoe molding. It looks fine either way. The reason I don't like it is because of furniture that has legs that make it stick out further from the wall due to that little molding. I hate the gap you get. I tend to have furniture like shaker style where the legs cause this gap. Never thought about it before having shoe molding in this house. Here is from my old house. The difference in color between baseboards wasn't as obvious in real life as you never faced the FP due to the layout of the house. Just showing this one as that is all I could find that showed tile too.

Hi, everyone. Thanks for the responses! The floor tile is already installed, so I guess it IS too late for cove tile on the bottom. I like the look of baseboard, but I want a very simple short one. This is the look I am going for: Is the baseboard installed first and then the tile on top of it? Or the tile goes to the bottom and then the baseboard? And if so, where does the baseboard get nailed into? Which is the correct order? I was thinking if I did shoe molding, it would be short and simple. But I guess it is weird looking. And what would that be nailed to? If I don't do a short baseboard, like 3.5 inches tall, then maybe sanded caulk is the cleanest way to go. Thanks!!

Charles Ross Homes- Thanks so much for the extra info on the need for tempered glass. I was originally going to do a semi circle type arch at the top, which was nearly $4,000 for that window section...so the 3 rectangles will be much cheaper overall. I am still debating if I want to do the full picture window from 7.5 inches from floor to my 96inch header...or do the awning window at the bottom. If I do the picture windows, the door directly to the left will have a retractable screen. We are building in woods, so there won't really be airflow, we just want to hear nature. ILOVERED-good point. My kiddos are older..and we would definitely babyproof for grandbabies...but there are so many other hazards that a locked window at that stage. Thanks to everyone for the calculations...I started with Google..but big difference between 5 and 8 inches!!! CP-Thanks for the photos. I'm thinking 1*8 for baseboard, 1*6 for above doors/windows and maybe 1*4 for the sides of my doors. I don't want anything too fancy. JuneKnow-Interesting. I pulled out all my crown molding and put 1*4 baseboard trim in my 8ft ceiling flip house. I like the nice look of the trim, but the cleaner look on the ceiling. I use to love crown molding...but I'm getting a little simpler in my tastes as I age. Still like nice and expensive...just a lot more things in my house to focus on than some crown molding 10 ft high.

I've never noticed that the toe kick gets beat up so I wouldn't worry about that. As was suggested above and was done in my kitchen for both remodels, a custom size toe kick panel must be made and then scribed to the floor or cabinet so that it sits on the floor. It's not difficult or complicated and it looks fine in the end. The peninsula in our first kitchen was at least an inch rise from one end to the other. They obviously didn't average it. The second kitchen was off by two inches. When I insisted they be reinstalled to split the difference in height between the two ends the contractor refused and I fired him. Had to hire another carpenter to fix it at my expense but it was worth it.

Jan Moyer - wow!!!! Beautiful!! That's exactly what I want - thank you so much for adding the pix - they tell it all! Funny that I have expressed to 2 pro carpet/floor stores, multiple contractors & handymen & not one spoke of scribing!!!!

Now i hope my guy will know how to do it - or at least the learning curve is easy!

LOL........... there's always u tube. Plenty of tutorials on scribing. A good trim guy on deck would be very helpful, along with very good floor prep and leveling as much as possible. The "beneath" matters : ) greatly.

Jan Moyer - thank you again! Unfortunately everyone wants lots of money - but to do as little work as possible or cut corners. My guy explained its best to leave/pound old staples into floors instead of pulling them (i cant remember reason) so they went to town like whack a mole. I have since been pulling what i can find out - its very easy & fun (at least 100). They think I'm crazy when i say get the level/laser & make sure floor is level (house 10yr old). And to make chalk lines - "there are already lines" uh yeah the sub floor lines.

Ugh - i hate to "offer" info but I have read to much & paid to much for products to be installed crappy &/or look bad.

I will never remodel again. This could be a script for a movie ! 🙄

I HEAR you! I feel your pain. I just said to a design pal of mine, regarding the general laissez faire mentality in which the entire country ( and also my industry!! ) seems to be suffering/ short version:

Remember the infamous JFK ? "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country"

My version:

Tell you what....: ) Everyone please get off your dead ass if you are capable of doing just about anything. Start doing the most , not the least , at whatever endeavor that may be. Get your panties up, Drive your own destiny and stop using a virus, or anything other than genuine disability as an excuse to langush.. or WORSE? TO ASSUME THERE IS SO MUCH TO GO AROUND THAT.........THE WORK WILL LAST FOREVER.

Trust me............................it. will. not.
