After a droughty year, which clematis seem to be doing best?

I have had a dry hot summer and some clematis are doing better than others. I was wondering if anyone had a clematis that was holding up to the dry hot summer better than others. I have two group two clematis that didn't rebloom at all. Pink Champeign and Killians Donahue. I also have crispy leaves. Hagley Hybrid is one that still looks good. Paulie is still blooming. Anyone else?

I am in North SF Bay area, zone 9b and on water rationing. (It is raining today, Alleluia!)

I have several Pink Champaign and none of them gave me a second bloom. I also have crispy leaves.

My Daniel Deronda and Samaritan Joe were the only vines that gave a fairly good second bloom. I have about 30 varieties. I hope they do better next spring.

It is always droughty here in summer and this one was very dry. We also had an early and extreme heat wave. All my clems did fine, considering almost all of them are grown in containers and get hand watered regularly. I intend to plant a few of the bigger ones in what little real estate I have available, as they have clearly outgrown the root space available in even a large container.

The only one that is still blooming now (second half of October) is florida 'Sieboldii, although pending buds are getting smaller and smaller :-)

All my roses are in pots for the reason that I'm a renter and that I like to rearrange roses periodically. I'd echo many of the points already made. I agree growing roses is generally easier in the ground but can be successful in pots. I'm not personally familiar with Austins. The one I recall growing years ago, Graham Thomas, was a sprawling monster not suited to being in a rose bed with bedding roses, let alone in a pot. It also blackspotted horribly, but that's an issue only of concern is some regions and climates. Selecting compact varieties certainly helps. Drainage and good potting medium are key. As already mentioned, lots of tap roots are not helpful in pot culture. I'd just add that this is precisely why I try to avoid roses grafted on Dr. Huey. I don't know what Australia's roses tend to be offered on as far as rootstock. But Dr. Huey rootbounds for me after 2 years. Growing roses on their own roots is my preference for pot culture. They seem to adapt more easily to pot life. If I can only find a variety I'm looking for on Dr. Huey, I'll get it but watch it and plan on root pruning every couple years, or, when appropriate, rooting a cutting from the grafted plant to replace the original. Occasionally a rose doesn't grow well on its own roots. I either give up on it or get it grafted on multiflora or fortuniana. Both have plentiful feeder roots and few to no sprawling taproots. Sometimes I procrastinate about root pruning, but usually by at least 4 year intervals I will do it at winter pruning time and partially replace the soil at the same time. That seems to rejeuvenate the roses. If it doesn't, I replace the offending rose. There are always new varieties on my wish list eager to take the spot. Though potted roses are more trouble in general, one advantage is I can control and ensure good drainage much more easily. Hi Jenn. Although I am in the Bay Area, I find clematis pretty easy. I've heard you're supposed to cut them back in the Spring or early Winter, but I have done that some years and not done it other years...it doesn't seem to matter. I do like to hit them with 0-10-10 over the Winter months. Then I just water once a week Spring through Summer. Have very nice flower displays. I don't know what you can do about the "dead-vine" look. Here is jackmanii romping through some old climbing rose. There are other clematis planted in this area but I can't remember which ones...usually the ones available from big-boxes. The President is one. Nelly Moser usually blooms down low in this area too.

OK, for evergreen, very low growing, dog tolerant and able to withstand the dry shade situation that exists under a bigleaf maple, your list will need to be revised a bit. Eliminate the following: Gallium odoratum - not evergreen and subject to fungal dieback annually in our climate. Baby tears and corsican mint - not reliably evergreen, won't tolerate much foot traffic and need even and regular moisture. Selaginella also requires more moisture than it will receive in this situation. Irish or scotch moss need lots of sun and regular moisture also (they are not true mosses and don't do well in shade). Of all the requirements, I'd be less concerned about height. Ajuga, Vinca minor, Rubus calcynoides and salal (Gaultheria shallon) will be your best bets - tough, determined and heavy duty evergreen plants that will withstand the conditions. Dwarf mondo (Ophiopogon 'Nana') will work also but is very slow to establish. Lamium can also work nicely - evergreen, often variegated or heavily patterned foliage, dry shade tolerant, but may not hold up well to dog traffic. Arenaria is a good choice for between the pavers or Azorella trifurcata (bolax). Any of these will still need regular watering through their first growing season (at least) to be come established and it would help a lot to keep the dogs off as much as possible until they get settled in and start spreading.

After a wet early summer the rest of it was very dry. I watered a lot. Here are the best ones so far: Mine are mostly pretty young plants.

Perle d'Azur

Etoile Violette

Guernsey Queen...not a lot of blooms yet but a lot of growth

Mme. Julia Corevon still blooming

Niobe tons of blooms "

Negritjanka vigorous, lots of blooms

Royal Velours starting to get established

Blue Angel

Sapphire Indigo seems to be tough and vigorous, great bloomer

Ville de Lyon "

Fuji Musumi....just stayed nice looking and leafy, grew well

Betty Corning last year was hu hum, this year wow

Killian Donohue a very strong plant that bloomed a lot

Princess Diana "

Huldine "

Omoshiro bloomed on and off most of the summer...good vigor

Emilia Plater no blooms yet, good vigor

Polish Spirit no blooms yet, vigorous

Rooguchi bloomed all summer

Rhapsody bloomed a lot

Mrs. Cholmondeley.....very pretty, much more lavender than expected, grew well

I have a lot of others in gallon pots ...too early to comment.

Kiri te Kanawa also did well in a med. size pot. I think it's bluer than the picture.

I planted Henryi in semi shade and that area dried out a lot. I am really pleased with how it hung in there and didn't quit. It didn't bloom I think but it is trying to make it in a tough spot.

Arabella was good but kind of rangy.
