Dwarf Banana
Comments (12)I've wintered mine in my laundry room all winter and the Carolinas have had a very cold winter! I'm growing mine in a pot also. Last year, it grew to about 5 ft. as it turns cold in October with frosts at night. I've been putting mine out in the sun to get it acclimated now that it's warmer. Thing is, Mom is slow about putting leaves out and there are 2 pups duking it out for unfurling leaves. Do I need to cut these pups out and repot as I worry they might be sapping Mom's strength. I read about cutting and I did one last year and did it wrong. I hesitate to cut on Mom afraid that I'll lose her and the pups if the cut goes badly. Any help with hints will do....See MorePups on my red dwarf banana plantand what to do?
Comments (4)I am not a professional banana person but I know a little. When the most mature plant does produce fruit and those fruit ripen or are removed for ripening indoors. The plant that bore said fruit will die so best to go ahead and remove it leaving the several pups to continue growing and to produce there own crop when they are mature enough. Pruning a few leaves now and then will not hurt a banana tree especially if it is actively growing and making new ones. But I would think in your zone they would need regular fertilizing and watering to produce fruit continually. I have in my zone 8b garden huge clumps of orinoco and I never remove the pups unless I am digging to pot to sale or giving a start to someone else. Now of course I don't have a space issue, But there are bearing size and pups all through each clump. Actually I am eating fresh tree ripenend fruit this week. But as soon as frost or freeze warning hit I have a stalk of fruit to cut and bring indoors. Hope that helped some. James Maloy...See MoreNew to Banana Plants - Just hit by frost and damaged
Comments (1)hello, I live in Kentucky, so we are pretty much in the same area. If you have the room inside and your banana is showing signs of new growth after the frost damage, then by all means keep it alive, in a sunny location of course. Water when needed, use fertilizer very lightly while growing indoors. Depending on size of plant, determines the size of your corm or rhizome. Small plants will have much less corm to feed off of, thus, if you can keep small plants alive indoors then its better than making them go dormant. If you have a large well established banana at least a year old, then your chances of survival are greater when you let them go dormant for the winter indoors. To store inside, cut pstem down below leaf level, cover with cloth, in a dark cool room. No need to water, feed during this time. Once spring arrives, and the threat of frosty weather leaves, then place outside, water and feed the banana to start growth again. Now if you decide to keep them alive indoors, and your damaged bananas look awful from the frost, you can cut off the leaves and stem below the damage, and the plant should take off again. If you are growing indoors, then the process will be a little slower. If kept in a warm, sunny area, watered and feed, the plant will recover from area cut and start regrowth. This process is only if you want to keep them alive indoors, and you do not want the long stem with one leaf sticking out the top. You will loose height, however your new growth will look nicer. Or, you can cut the damaged leaves off, and let the plant continue to grow from that point with the one leaf at the top. Your choice. I hope I didnt sound to confusing....See MoreSIck Dwarf Banana
Comments (5)I just wanted to update and say its looking worse. SOme of the leaves are still drying out. The two leaves are bending in half with a really dark green look. COuld it be from frost damage. Im in zone 6 and we have had some cold cold weather this December. I think at least twice my electric heater wasnt able to keep or sustain the 35 degree temp I wanted. My meyer lemond and satsuma still look just fine though. They must be more cold tolerant. HOw do you know when to upsize in pots. The dwarf banana is in a 5 gallon pot as are the lemond and orange are. Do it start to suffer then you just know to upsize pots? It has some pretty big supeficial roots from its growth. Its been in the pot since last May. I would hate to lose to plant but if I did then thats just the way it goes. Any advice would be greatly appeciated....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
