Boy is this forum boring lately!!
Comments (39)Howdy..I responded to the thread a few days ago, then the puter went out...sheesh. The weather here in IL is terrible...Aug 1st, nearing autumn..it's been autumn-like the last few wks/month/rain, clouds, and cold..the winds are strong..I've been out back at least 5 times to pick up felled plants, plus indoor AV's, in the windows, went flying. A nice muddy-mess to clean up, behind the couch. Yellow thanks..I've heard of Little Gems, but it could have been another plant..Whatever, your Mag is MAGnicant..lol..it's growing indoors? In summer too? Mike, I got the Murraya at Osco Drug Store in the late 90's..lol..there stood a group of Murrayas by the front door..I passed them the first and second time while shopping..The third time, I felt it was an omen, I was meant to have one..The next thing I knew, a tree was in the cart..lol...they were orignially 29.99, then 19.99 then 14.99..I got it at 14.99..I considered it a bargain, since it was a tree. Mike, you're getting a sun room? Wow!!! Is your friend building a room that's already built or from scratch? Do you have blue prints? Did he ask how you wanted it to look? For instance, is he putting in large windows? Sunroof? Fans? Heat? I get excited hearing about such a project, plus end results..You are so lucky. What demensions will it be? What about flooring? When will he start and finish? You must take before and after pics, if the room is pre-built..I hope he finishes before you bring plants in this year.Yes siree.. Do you think it'll be completed? I am sooo happy for you.. Mike, I know you were kidding about a laser light sucking up bugs, but there are such things..The problem is, dont know if they're meant for indoors..They attract 'flying' insects.. Also, investing in a Citronella plant might do some good. They also sell candles. There are two types..One, is a Geranium/Pelargonium, smells like Raid.. The second is true Citronella..Here's a link..it explains how to grow/use true Citronella. http://www.life123.com/home-garden/plant-guides/groundcover/citronella-grow-your-own-mosquitio-repellent.shtml Cut and Paste the addy, otherwise it'll take long to type out..lol.. I've talked to people who crunch up dead Scented Geraniums leaves and place on top of soil. I truly think it works. Certain scents, not all..there's numerous scented Geraniums, but smells like Rose or Vanilla wouldn't do the job keeping them away. Accents sells Scented Geraniums at decent prices. Mike, what month do you haul plants back indoors? Mike..you embarrassed me..I'm not an expert..lolol..guess I lucked out contemplatiing what would kill plant bugs without using chemicals. I thought, "hmm, if I happened to be a mite, what flavors would turn me off?" lol.. I too had bug problems in all the years of growing plants, especially during winter once heat was turned on and air was dry. Before computers, I read as many plant books as I could find. Library and purchasing. Also, growing plants, trying to duplicate their native habitats. Eg. Tropical = rainy/sunshine..C&S's, desert climates. Growing is the best experience learning. The first thing I did was start misting, and hose/shower. Second, purchased a humidifer. Third, bought a small, rotating fan. Started mixing soils, etc. But no matter how much one reads, there are times a certain plant attracts mites. Some plants are prone. That's how I thought myself to be a mite..lol, and came up with the home-made recepie. End of story. I just noticed Mike said he started another thread, and this post has turned into a short story..Sorry..See what happens when we talk plants..lol..hugs, Toni...See MoreWhere is the kitchen off-topic forum?
Comments (6)Thanks, beekeeperswife...I finally saw it :) You're right...not much traffic. Confusing since I see a lot of 'kitcheny' subject lines. *shrug* So...there's really no good place to post off-topic threads that get traffic? What about the 'kitchen table'?...See MoreBox Boy crosspost from windows forum- logistics and who builds?
Comments (21)HI Everyone, I wanted to update on my bay window in the eating area. It was installed yesterday and is beautiful, what a difference it makes to have the bumpout and the larger window! My previously planned kitchen expansion has contracted to just this but I am super pleased with it. I found online that Sunrise windows are well regarded and has a "projected frame" window that is made at the factory, so emailed them. They put me in touch with their local contractor. Many emails and two meetings later (I also had a door replaced and a new exterior door placed), the window part was constructed in one day. I asked for foam insulation to be added all around and then covered with Azek to be sure that the window stayed warm. Sunrise only offered this type of bay with the windows going all the way down. My next project is to create a flip up wood shelf that can sit on the seat when closed and act as a back support when opened. Total cost for the window, extra insulation, trimming with Azek, and installation is about $5000 all told and they considered the corbels sufficient support, so no torsion box needed. Some electrical had to be moved down also. The header and window width is unchanged. Absolutely worth it and it's amazing how easy the new windows and doors are to operate. My patio door went from a two handed, full body planted heaving opening effort to single finger opening. The new windows in the bay move with a few fingers. When they are closed up the garden sounds completely disappear, unlike our old windows . Super low air infiltration. Next is the kitchen remodel in the existing space, finally! Comments (2)wow, it's been forever since i popped back into this forum and i was reading through the threads and found this one that i posted 2 years ago. what a blast from the past! update on situation... in november of 2004 my ex contacted me (no surprise, he needed money). i sent him the money with the demand that i be allowed to contact my son and see him. it was difficult, but i made the decision that what has happened, happened, and i did not pursue any type of legal action on his disappearing with my son. nothing can bring back the time i lost with my boy, i figured all i could do was move forward from that point in time where we reestablished contact. i am happy to say that my son spent last summer with us, and again this past christmas. it hasn't all been easy, my older son wants nothing to do with his brother and refuses to be in the house when his brother is here (older son went out west to visit his father last summer while younger son was here, same at xmas time) i remember long ago during mediation the counselor used the term "polarized" regarding my boys, i didn't really understand what it meant at the time, but now i think i do. i'm hoping over time the boys will come together as brothers and that they can overcome the damage that their father has done to their relationship. it's almost summertime again, and i am looking so forward to having my now 15 year old son back in my home for a couple of months. his little sister adores him and she misses him terribly when he leaves to go back to his father. my son is not happy with his father, he has expressed a longing to come live with us (and since he is over the age of 14, in the state he lives in, he would be able to go into court and tell the judge which parent he wants to live with) , but the feud with his brother is getting in the way. i would love to find a way for these boys to get along and try to find some sort of neutral ground, and then i could put my family back together again completely. in the meantime though, i treasure every visit and phone call with my son and i thank god every day that my boy is back in my life. :) jiggreen...See MoreJurassic Park
