SusannahSB, Many tropical hibiscus can survive with only a few hours of direct sun. An environmental change will always results in leaf and bud drop. HVH has some good fertilizer products for indoor plants and great tips also. As for lighting, the wife and I put together a great set up for very low cost. My pleasure :) There are different sizes of fluorescent lamps 2 feet and 3 feet. CFL would work too, just make sure that you get a reflector so the light goes down on plants and not the ceiling.There are reflectors that you could buy or you could try to make it yourself. The wattage of the bulb you need to get will depend on the size of your plant. The bigger the plant the bigger bulb you will need. here is an example of a CFL light fixture with a reflector http://www.greners.com/i/grow-lights/fluorescent-grow-lights/compact-fluorescent-fixtures/brite-wing-fluorescent-lamp-fixture.html and here is an example of full spectrum CFLs that you could use for your plant. If you hang them straight down they might over heat their ballast and catch on fire. You could try to go with the 42 watt bulb but I see that these plants grow bigger so I would go with at least 85watt . If you have anymore questions just let me know

Can lights? No good. Grow light? Of course it would work. Pointed up from the floor? No, the sun shines down not up. Now for wattage. Ideally 100w per square foot like the sun provides. 75 is good. 50 is suffecient to get fruit on fruit trees. 25 is decent for leaf only plants you only kinda want to live. Any less and it's not going to be healthy.

thanks guys. I live in Ontario Canada. its just all this mumble jumble of lighting and plants is very complicated. when they say a plant needs low medium or high light... how does one define medium light accurately? I know most foliage plants u buy...dracaenas, pothos, ivy, philos, spaths, sans, zz, parlor palm, bamboo palm, dwarf scheffs, even coffee nana the list goes on with common indoor plants all need medium light. now ive been using a light meter on my cell phone walking around inside my living room at various spots away from windows like the interior of my living room where I wanna decorate with indoor plants the most rather then clutter my south-south west window sills of plants.. ive read on many websites if I go by foot-candles (which my phone light meter does) then medium light as a rule is approx. 75-150 ish foot-candles for more then a few hours daily...mind u early in the day and later in the day as the sun sets or rises one wont have 75-150 FC reading lol. but yea many of my spots in the interior of my room have readings from 75-150FC and as stated by many websites that's approx. medium light. even tho the interior locations in my apartment look dark to me..human eyes don't judge light good at all as we see different light then plants do.. even tho the interior locations look dark when I use my phones light meter I get readings of around 80-150 FC sometimes a lil higher! so im guessing if my light meter in a "dark" area still reads a higher FC like 80-150 ish reading I can go ahead and put a medium light plant there and save my hot blazing sunny window sills for amaryllis soon in stores, and my cacti, and my aloe, and my date palm seedlings and my lemon tree seedlings and my mango tree seedling im gonna start lol free plants r the best lol
