So confused about whether grass clippings are brown or green!
Comments (9)I had a dump pile that the landscapers and previous owners and then ourselves dumped into. It’s been sitting there for years. It’s turned into soil or compost but I had to clean out ivy roots that grew through it and it seems very dry can I still use this as a compost also our grass is full of weeds right now so when i cut it it’s not all green either some of the grass clippings are brown due to stress. In the fall we are reseeding. When we moved in house had been empty for five years. Anyway I’m trying to get it looking darker and richer how can I do this. Also the pile is very large. I did use some of it in a garden bed i weeded. Just trying to figure out if I can get it richer. This year I’ve been adding kitchen scraps and turning it. I’m in some 6....See Moreanyone ever paint their brown wood furniture white / cream?
Comments (7)Recently I bought (after measuring very carefully to make sure they were not too tall!) floor to ceiling dark brown, stained and lacquered bookcases from a store that was going out of business and selling (or basically giving away) their display cases. I filled in a few screwholes with plastic wood, lightly sanded a few rough areas, painted the cases inside and out with a good-quality white primer (this is the essential step!), sanded away any drip marks, and then finished with two coats of the same paint my daughter and son-in-law had used to paint the woodwork in the house they had recently bought. I had a handyman bolt them to the walls on either side of the living room fireplace and then add trim around the top which matches the rest of that in the room. The bookcases look completely built in. They were excellent quality pieces with crown moldings and striated rails---they look wonderful!! No one would ever guess in their previous life they were old brown dismanteled display cases from a store that had gone out of business! Paint will do wonders. As for the pulls, don't dream of trying to paint them-- take one of the old ones to Home Depot or a local hardware store. They will help you buy new ones which will fit the existing holes (never try to drill new holes--that leads to real problems which a coat of paint can't fix!!) Good luck with your daughter's room--I know it will be beautiful and she will appreciate your hard work as my daughter and her husband did....See MoreThe brown furniture nobody--everybody?--wants.
Comments (7)I wonder if as time has passed people have become more sentimental for the items? We were grateful that after my husband's grandmother passed a lovely old oak sideboard was stored for us by a family member (without us knowing). We thought it lost after the family bickered over some of the silliest items and we just assumed the sideboard had been caught up in the bickering. . Now that we've moved into a new house we've found a great place for it and it's been nice to have something from her house to carry on in our house....See Morehow would you lighten this space so it isn’t so brown/orange?
Comments (15)don't paint the cabinets, they look like they work well with the rest of your house. we have knotty hickory cabinets similar in look to yours in our house we bought year ago. even though I wasn't crazy about them at first I love them now. we painted the walls Valspar "smoked oyster" a warm gray with brown undertones. its a lot nicer than the stark white the walls were originally painted. our cabinet hardware is oiled bronze, I think it works better with the grain of the wood. someday I plan on changing the appliances to slate or black stainless. there is gray in our flooring even though this picture doesn't look like it. and this picture is not the best its dark so I'm showing our laundry because it shows the color better....See MoreRelated Professionals
