Arboreum shipment arrived
Comments (3)Last year they sent me a refund in the spring informing me that the Jefferson plums I ordered had failed and told me where I might find some. In 2012 I got a Cambridge Gage and a Green Gage. They were really healthy trees and are doing really well for me now. I'd like to order more trees from them, but they only had one Euro Plum variety available this year. I think they have pretty high standards and if the trees aren't good enough they won't send them out. I know that this is the first year for their user friendly website, maybe there were some glitches with the "quantity available" feature....See MoreNew shipment of violets arrived limp
Comments (11)Hi Linda Again, great advice. progress report: I've started a bunch of rooted leaves in tiny 1.5" pots with perlite in the bottom, a bit of soil mix on top of that. I forgot to get wicks. I still have not figured out what to use for wicks. Once the leaves send up babies and I move them to 2" pots, I will get wicks. They are all under domes. My hardware store had domed trays. I potted up the "leggy" plants from 2" to 3", but again, forgot the wicks, and put in a layer of perlite. So I guess I will be top watering. With all that legginess, there is plenty of room. i moved all the new plants that were not leggy but not in regular soil that came from a different grower that I had put into 4" pots down to 3" pots and they are in the warm, humid bathroom under fluourescent lights. I had ordered 3" pots from a grower. Also, a fertilizer to add to water for rooting. I read the ingredients on the orchid food, it contains urea, so I went back to violet food for the AVs in bloom. I gave away another batch of plantlets that had grown into decent size plants, all potted up into the right size pots. (I had to move some down from 4" to 3") There is a batch of plantlets coming up in 1/5" pots What's next are the plants that have suckers on them or a second crown to divide. There are just three of those. Joanne 47...See MorePhlox Seedlings - unhealthy looking yellowish green?
Comments (4)*whew* thanks! I was a little worried. Out of curiosity..with these. do I cut them back for winter? or since they are so small do I just leave them be? I guess I'll keep them outside (so much easier!) I'm just unsure about winter preparation. While I'm asking...How about the large garden phlox I have? do those get cut back at all for winter? I seem to be finding mixed answers on it. as for not planting them yet - I am actually just not sure where I want them (LOL) or even if I am going to be keeping them all ...I may just toss some to ebay buyers next summer when I think they are big enough to do okay with going in the mail and get to people looking good and healthy (I've gotten some terrible looking Phlox myself so I dont want to do that to anyone) I just got a bunch of larger plants on sale at Lowes (gaura, Russian Sage, Lavender, a 2 VERY big Salvia Furman's red bushes) for between $1.50-$6 each..nothing smaller than a 1.7 gallon nursery pot! So I am reconfiguring a bit to get them in where I want them (I have seeds for all of them but for so cheap for a full plant I'll forget about the seeds now) so until next summer when I get a better idea of what the heck I'm doing with all this stuff I have pretty much all of the smaller plants of my collection in nursery pots and smaller plastic starter-type trays (not to the amusement of my significant other who says our front yard & driveway now look like a nursery haha)...See MoreShipments of F&E 'Peace' arriving at Kmarts
Comments (3)Lowe's is disappointing this year so far. Aside from getting my first Blue Heaven #3 pot for $15 with *minor* freeze damage to upper foliage, I haven't seen much worth getting. AND... Their #3 F&E's are now $34.95, which is $10 more than last year! But.. I've been to 3 different Kmarts now, and they all have #3 Peace now. I decided to pick one up to replace a failed test specimen (one of two Merritt's). Ball Hort says "blooms on old wood first and then on current year's growth". So far this is following suit as it has about a dozen small buds on stems originating from old wood. So here it is:...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
