Anything worth planting for food this late? NE usa
Comments (6)If you plant something in a pot you can always bring it in and keep near a sunny window on the cold nights and days, and set it back out when the days are warmer. I have lots of kale in pots that I plan to bring in during the night (though you are in a colder zone). I also have heating cables in larger pots to keep the roots of kale and chard alive long into the freezes. Or you could plant radishes. 30 days until maturity. Pretty much starting anything (except radishes) from seed will probably not go well for you in your zone. Realize that many people responding to this are in zone 8 or maybe even higher. It might do well to find out what zone you are in. Zone maps are easily available....See MoreHow late is too late to be planting in a cold frame?
Comments (5)I have found that if you want to harvest veggies all winter long you have to start the seeds in the fall. There isn't enough light during the day to get much growth. You need longer days with stronger sunlight than what December brings. So, you could plant seeds for something like carrots that take a long time to sprout anyway and just let them do what they will or you could start some seeds indoors and then transplant them out in the cold frame after you harden them off a bit. It's always a crap shoot - if you start stuff too early and we have a mild fall you'll get too much growth and lettuce and stuff will bolt after one mild day (it seems) or you start them late and it stays cold and cloudy and nothing grows til Spring. If you have the empty space I say go ahead and plant something but don't expect a lot of winter growth....See MoreRead anything lately you'd recommend?
Comments (36)Maxmom, I agree, The Devil in the White City is not fiction. It is what is what I call "historical fiction". Though based on history (and a lot of it for sure) there are obviously things in the storyline that are unknown to the author, especially in the serial killer's private life. What makes this story a little less like a true historical fiction is the fact that all of the main characters were real, not created in the author's mind, but I still see it as historical fiction. Regardless, the story was fascinating. Jodi-...See MoreWhat's good to plant in late September? Anything?
Comments (5)Check out the Allium forum, lots of info on growing garlic. Garlic is great to grow, but it stays in the ground until July, so it will take up your space. On the other hand, you can plant it 6 inches apart, so you can squeeze a lot in a small space, and the green tops are goo to eat, too. Buy planting stock online....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
