Palimpsest-- color vs. contents-based rooms.
Comments (41)This thread is fascinating! Thank you Pal for the visuals. I totally see the difference with the visuals. However, I also found it a little depressing. I love both the 1st MHG room and the Miles Redd room. But, those rooms will never be in my budget, and I fear I am the last room, which I am not attracted to at all. I have a red living room...I had the neutral furniture...none of it special in any way, but it wasn't getting replaced anytime soon...I needed a color I liked that played nicely with surrounding rooms...and ended up with red. I like it. Or I thought I did. Ugh. Now I need to go look at it or pictures of it and see if it's the last room. DH will not be happy about this :-)...See MoreNew Resoration Hardware Catalog
Comments (42)The sent us two catalogs. Two. As if that weren't wasting enough money, the chain is also developing a gigantic, multi-story, multi-million dollar showroom on Newbury Street in Boston in an exquisite old building with its own French gardens. Serious, serious bucks being spent. At the same time, the company is getting ready to go public again. I think management is literally insane. It's not just that they are too stupid to household their lists, thus accidentally doubling the already enormous cost of their bible mailing. But they also just fired their CEO for diddling his staff, yet kept him on the catalog cover. And they're already backpedaling from his "vision" (more like a migrain aura), by introducing a new catalog of much smaller furniture with no clawmarks in sight--meaning, the RH style already is going out of style at RH....See MoreWall color to complement taupe couch?
Comments (28)I think I've almost got a color narrowed down. I found a really nice grey that is almost right, so I'm going to try to get a darker sample and see if it will be as fantastic as I'm hoping it will be. However, I've hit another problem. As I look at my fireplace (which I hope to strip back down to its natural brick), I've realized that the proportions are really throwing me off. The mantle seems too small considering the size of the fireplace. Am I crazy in thinking so? Something has to be done with the mantle anyway, since it's not even attached to the fireplace. We can pull it right off, which seems a bit dangerous since there's also an outlet built into it. I like the look of this sort of fireplace, with the pretty white wood against the dark brick. They even have dark walls, which helps me to visualize what mine could look like. But given the shape of mine, I can't really see a way to achieve that look. Any ideas on how I might? The bits of brick that stick out at the top, as well as the fact that my brick doesn't extend to the ceiling, has me thinking I won't be able to just attach boards. Maybe I should just make the mantle a bit thicker? From the floor to the top of the brick is 52 3/4" and the width is 55 1/2", if that helps....See MorePick a color, any color...seriously! Comments (6)I would look at some of the Historical collections of colors...California Paints, Farrow & Ball or Ben Moore. There are brights within each collection, particularly the first two, but you won't run the risk of going overboard as they are all toned down a bit. F&B Cooking Apple green comes to mind. Or Teresa's Green for more of an aqua. I'd worry a bit that pale blue with a northern exposure will feel too cool. I have F&B Vert de Terre in my bedroom now, a slightly warm green, and I find it just right. I also just used BM Ambiance in my north-facing laundry room. It is soft but still has a touch of red in it for warmth. I remember your stucco disaster. Such a sad story. I am glad to hear you've turned the corner and are getting ready to move on to the good stuff. And I have always loved your house. Hope you still love it too!...See Moresusanlynn2012
