Installation of bathroom exhaust fan.

When my contractor was changing out my bathroom exhaust fan, tons of loose, grey insulation fell out of the hole in the ceiling. This worries me. The fan is now installed and I would like to know how the ducting is insulated and if they truly did connect it to the duct leading outside the house.

Before I realized the contractor was installing a fan, I had bought the fans to have them installed before the arrival of the contractor. Anyway, in first calling a electrician, I found out I would need a HVAC specialist and also an electrician to finish the electrical part of the installation. (2 different companies) My contractor's workers, before I knew it, had installed the fan. I guess they are HVACs and electricians. That is why I am worried about if the duct connecting to the outside and if it is properly insulated. Any comments that would make me not so worried.

Only way to know is to get in the attic and look to see how and where it is connected and insulated properly.

Comments from us will do nothing to change thigs. You need to go up into the attic and look to see what they did.

Your whirly bird sounds as though it is meant to be an attic ventilator. You really should have a separate roof jack for an exhaust fan. If you run the duct from an exhaust fan to the whirly bird, you risk exhausting conditioned air through the exhaust fan, even when the fan isn't operating.

I would guess you can, but one big fan will work more efficiently than 2 small ones. I can't say for certain without seeing in person.

You may want to repost on the HVAC board. Sounds like you need a HVAC contractor to add make up air into your house. It's very important too, if you have a natural gas water heater and/or furnace.

Thanks for everyone's feedback! This was helpful. Your suggestions have prompted me to think about alternative options, especially considering how difficult it would be to detach the conduit (I thought I just loosen the nut thingies, but looks like that's not the case). I figured there's no way to replace or expand the current switch box, so I'll find a way to just add a second one alongside it and use two separate switch plate covers. After opening the wall more, it seems there's just a board running between the two studs (see pic) that the current box is nailed to. I plan to get another box that's the same depth and just screw it to the same board. Punch the holes between the two boxes, connect wiring through there. Not sure how many electrical codes I'll be violating haha...
