Indoor seed starting light for child

Please recommend a good, but small grow light for starting seedlings indoors that would be appropriate for a 7 year-old. If it comes with a seedling tray and supplies, that would be great. And even better if it could be purchased in Canada, particularly at amazon.ca. (I live in the US and my grandson lives in Calgary)

I recommend you do an Amazon search, like for example, this one. Click on the link. It is for a USA Amazon search in the Garden and Outdoor category.

Seed starting lamp for child

You could do the same search at the Canada Amazon. Don't rely too heavily on the appropriateness of the Amazon search. It probably isn't smart enough to pick products that are safe for a child. It probably just looks for the word "child" in the product description. But the child you have in mind has probably already been around electrical lamps for reading and such, so you may be able to judge which products are suitable based on their photo and description.

Have you tried Lee Valley? They have a number of grow-light choices that might be suitable and they have all of the seed starting supplies. What a great activity for a child!

Are you getting the green algae type mold? That, in and of itself, doesnt hurt the seedlings. But when it gets bad, it can form a coat over the top of the soil which can smother them, then if it dries out, it forms a hard crust, but that usually takes a while. 24 hours is really fast for it to form, so you must be introducing spores somewhere along the way. Is it growing in the container you water them with? Once the seeds are growing you can gently stir the top of the soil (I use a small screw driver) to break up the coating. I'd switch from peat pots to plastic cups for starters. I use the little 3 oz cups for starting. Vermiculite and peat both hold water a long time. try mixing in 20-30% pearlite, so that your mix drains better. You arent keeping them covered once they have germinated are you? that is never good. As soon as you see anything poking through - get rid over the covering. If there are still seeds that havent germinated, gently mist the top of the soil regularly to keep it from drying out, and the rest of the seed will germinate just fine.

Bandido I was under the impression that poppies needed some cold to germinate properly. Just an impression, one southern grower told me to scatter seeds outside in mid-December to assure plants in the spring. If so, you'll need to address this by possibly freezinf or chilling the seeds. Here is some references I came across on this: "February is a particularly good month to sow seeds of some wildflowers - perhaps not the month we would naturally start our seed sowing, but many seeds require a period of very cold weather before germination will take place. This is known as ÂvernalisationÂ and species requiring this cold treatment can be sown now, as February is often our coldest month. We are sometimes advised to put seeds of the wild Primulas (cowslip, primrose and oxlip) or those of snakeshead fritillary, wild hellebore or poppy into the fridge or freezer for a while before sowing. Unfortunately this often does often not reproduce the exact conditions these species need Â several spells of really cold temperatures interspersed with fluctuating higher ones. There is really only one way of exposing seeds to these exacting conditions and that is to sow now in pots or seed trays and leave them outside. Nature will do the rest for you very efficiently."

I just bought a bunch of inexpensive shop lights, and hung them from a wire shelf rack. It works very well, and I grow a lot of seedlings indoors but also overwinter a few small plants. With the actual light tubes, there are some that are better than others, and they'll say 'natural sunshine' or 'full spectrum' or something like that.

I use 4 T12s per shelf using 2 "lights of america" shop light fixtures per shelf which seems to work fine altough they are the specific plant and aquarium rated tubes(I have a variety of all top 3 brands. Phillips, GE, and Sylvania). My shelves are also 4ft by about 18 and the back side thats towards the wall has foil with the reflective side facing the plants. Rather than use CFLs it would work a lot better if you can find some 2 foot fixure or multiple fixtures that would hold 4 to 6 24" plant/aquarium lights. I pondered the idea of having a smaller 2 foot unit like yours when I started running out of room on my 4 foot shelf but after trying to research fixtures and bulbs I found it difficult to find this sized light fixtures in local stores. I could order them and pay a lot for shipping but not readily easily found in my local stores. I could find plenty of 4 foot and 18 inch lights and fixtures but not 24 so I just ended up getting a 2nd 4 foot mini green house. I suppose thats for the better since I still have another 4 feet length worth of shelving to expand even more in the future :) and I can fit 4 trays on each shelf
