What color would you pick for a nursery?
Comments (21)Thanks for all of the great suggestions! :) The lighter shade on the background of the green dot fabric is actually a cream color and not a light green. I've found several samples that seem to match the cream color, but I don't know if that will be much of a change over the white that's currently on the wall. Here's a closer picture that might help some: There will also be a glider chair in the room that has several shades of green, so I'm worried that there might be too much green in the room if I paint the walls green, too. The stripe of the bumper has several colors that I could use, but again, I'm worried about having too much green in the room. Here's a closer picture of the fabric, although it's difficult to see all of the colors clearly. One of the stripes is actually a purple color. After seeing the above picture of yellow, I really like it. Do you think something like that would work? Or maybe even a light purple that matches the stripe? Or maybe the light cream color on top and a darker cream on the bottom?...See MoreWhat chair would you pick for corner if this was your home?
Comments (69)Power down there Ken_Adrian, I didnâÂÂt ignore I already stated that one side is the entry and the other wall is all sliders to the pool. And, yes it doesnâÂÂt have to be leather. I do like that Dijon color though and I LOVE the shape of those chairs. I have always thought no furniture in front of sliders as well. In this case though it could work. I have very substantial walk ways on both side of the sofa group. After my tea IâÂÂll get on my little knee scooter and try to measure. Depending on the chair size I could still have maybe a 35âÂÂâ walkway or so. However, I think the chairs will have to be low and have to have open arms and or open back as suggested. This is an odd little house and we have already had to change a few windows sizes and sliders. I call this house the house of slider door. The master bath we are remodeling had a shower that was two sides of sliders leading to a since dilapidated little atrium. PO owners did an abomination with that area so the whole room had to be gutted including the studs. There were two sliders next to the toilet in the guest bathroom, now thatâÂÂs gone. The master bedroom has two sets of sliders that waste the whole corner of the room so one of those will be changed to a window so I can have some wall space. The dining room has two set of sliders, one on each corner. Originally the kitchen had a slider; POâÂÂs changed that to a badly done window that needs to be redone. In this living area though IâÂÂm keeping the wall of glass. Excluding the media wall all the furniture has to be floated as its all open plan to kitchen, dining, entry and pool. So, in a nut shell IâÂÂll have to break some rules somewhere to make this a comfortable livable living room. There is not really another configuration for the sofa group. IâÂÂm ok with that. My goal was for me to get my own sofa to stretch out on for movies. Voila, thank you so muchâ¦IâÂÂm off to have a look. IâÂÂm still thinking IâÂÂll have to buy used though and perhaps have something recovered. It would be nice if I didnâÂÂt have to though. Tomato, I am going to have plants but IâÂÂm thinking maybe some plants on the media cabinet with some doodads. I may call for your help when I get to that section. IâÂÂm going to use the same brand ceiling speakers I used in my last house. The hard part for me is going to be switching to an in wall subwoofer. That black thing is a very good subwoofer that I hate to part with. In my last house it was somewhat hidden by furniture. I was hoping to hide it behind a corner chair in this house. However, I donâÂÂt want the whole room to look stupid....See MoreTime to pick finishes for the HI vacation rental. I would love help.
Comments (49)not to throw you a total curve, but the reason the Hawaiians and missionaries used koa, mango, and other exotic woods is because they stand up to the humidity (I'm on Oahu). You see a lot of teak around the island - also used on boats as it does not swell - but its color is lighter - and often more Scandinavian in design. Rattan used a lot and I love the look, but impossible in my mind to keep really clean looking over time as dust and crumbs fall in. Pacific Craftworks on Oahu sells custom cabinets made from mostly darker colored woods in Viet Nam - another tropical place - that should hold up to Hawaii weather (no affiliation) - some looks like mahogany but different wood. We used them in our master bath and the prices weren't bad. The dark woods are traditional but too much can make the room feel heavy. Hawaiian homes were influenced by missionaries from New England, cowboys, Balinese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Europeans, and plantation owners. So we don't have a purely beach feel - the white rattan look is more East Coast. Tropical is the darker, wider strip, rattan. Here it is all about moss rock, exotic woods, flowers, surfboards, waves, turtles, pineapple, dark sea blues and green foliage mixed with white, cream, and woven mats. If you stick to the white (which will look clean, fresh, and airy) make sure they are quality boxes to hold up to the humidity. For the Hawaii vibe decorate with a few koa or monkeypod (less expensive) chairs, coffee table, or a bowl on your counter, bring in the light and the air and avoid kitsch. Your koa fan will tie into those accents. The one you have chosen is very modern looking and I understand that fewer blades (3 to 4) move more air than 5. Traditionally locals used lots of fans to move the trade winds and homes were designed to pull in the trades. Don't fall for a kitschy fan if it doesn't function well. Suggest any fabrics have local tropical flowers (ginger, heliconia) in large, lush prints. Your inspiration Kauai cottage has beautiful accent pillows that illustrate this - the upholstery is beige but the pillows have heliconia and tropical leaves to bring in color....See MoreMetal Roof - What would you pick?
Comments (14)@lyfia Understood. Our previous leaks were as follows; Shingle roof didn't have a great pitch but the issue arose because certain parts were installed incorrectly (it was a contractor that flipped the house and apparently cut corners unbeknownst to us) and one bad storm caused major leaking in a couple areas. The metal rib roof leaking was minor and due to screws backing out over time with movement of the roof through the seasons. It will need to be re-screwed in ~5-7 years time we are told. I guess this is maintenance that is to be expected. That's why I want standing seam. Aside from painting every once in awhile (so I hear) there *shouldn't* be any maintenance that is necessary to overall structural integrity - provided it is installed correctly as you point out....See Morekchamousis
