Arabicums Seed Pods
Comments (4)Hi Paula, In your zone, they will probably open within a few weeks.. But these little guys are so hard to gauge, so I also recommend using something to catch them before they decide to fly away.. It has happened to me before. They opened and then that afternoon, they were gone. Some of my trees with pods have slowed down since this cold down. In your heat, they could continue to mature and then POOF! They are here!!! I have even tied twine to mine to keep them closed so that I could see them opened before I can miss anything. Stocking is another great idea. I just use twine in a few places on the pod. Good luck. Comments (30)Tami: I cut the single heart shaped leafs away from the main green stem. This leaves the stem on the plant and doesn't hurt it. Leave a little tail on the leaf so it has a little part of the stem on it and put it in the dirt. Some leafs will shrivel and die (not all will take), but just spray them a little with a spray bottle of water every other day or actually when you remember, even every day if you want-- and they will start a bulb. The leaves are pretty hardy, if you pick the bigger, more fat, thick ones, they will be better. I haven't had great luck with the actual green stems other than you can just put the trailing stems on top of a pot of dirt and it will eventually root down and create new bulbs. When this has happened, you can cut it away from the main plant. You can do this on most trailing succulents such as string of peas, rhipsalis, etc. In nature they trail along the ground to start new plants. This is my first seed pod, so we will see how that goes. I have some haworthias that I got seed pods from and have found only 1 out of 6 seeds has grown so far. But I do hear seeds can go dormant and sprout when they feel like the time is right, so I haven't given up yet!...See MoreUse a piece of sheer stocking to catch seeds?
Comments (2)Women's nylon hose works good. Starting from the toe, cut about four inches off the hose. Tie a knot in the end and cut another 4 inches off. Put one of these over the pod and secure with a twistie underneath. I keep a jar full. It's the only way to go on vacation! I advise cutting the pod and hose off together when you get back and the pod has ripened. Open in the house over a bowl to catch wayward seeds. Ed...See Moreplumeria with seed pods
Comments (8)Hello Everyone, Hello Ricky and Welcome to the forum!!! Like Jen mentioned above, i too have had only one seed pod develope last summer. I dont have much experience with them, but i left it on and didnt touch it all winter while it was dormant. Placed the container outside like all of the others and then during the summer it did turnn brown like Jen said. Only in a manner of days it split open and i lost half of the seeds. When they do open its is very quick. I have heard of somee people placing knee hi stockings over the pod and gently securing it to the pod once it starts to show signs of turning. I missed that window and i now realize that i should have been watching sooner. It did take a long time once it developed a pod on the tree to ripen and then finally split. So dont worrry if it seems like it takes forever. I hope this helps a little, Sorry for not posting sooner, I have been working way to hard and finally now have a chance to breath!! : ) Take care everyone, Laura in VB...See MoreJason, zone 7A, near Greensboro NC
