Picking colors for an entire house? Thoughts on BM affinity colors?
Comments (13)I used two Affinity colors in our current place..(if I'm not mistaken..it was several years ago). I used Kangaroo for master bedroom, and Driftwood for my daughter's room. Love them both till this very day. But I then I prefer colors that are a bit murkier, muddy, complex, and ever-changing. Not everybody does-colors are so personal. Also they might look totally different in your place than in mine, and for sure different from a sample on a paper, or on a screen, or in a jar..you'll need to try them all first in your rooms in your light. Colors should flow, but since bedrooms are more private space, usually closed, sometimes on a different level than the rest of the house-you can go and be more free in your color choices when it comes the bedrooms. You can try and introduce other colors from your home palette a bit, in furnishings, art, etc. I'd pick a several colors within each of your daughter choices that you like too..then ask them to narrow it to 2 or 3..then try samples on the wall, look at it in different times of the day, etc., then decide. PS my teenagers also prefer these kind of colors..purple gray, green gray..darker, murkier side..interesting....See MoreI bought my house and then discovered...
Comments (49)Okay, it's been about 5 years since my next door neighbour died and renters from hell have been moving in and out of the house. UPDATE: a new family moved in next door on Thursday night! First people in the house since September. Both my husband and my son (at different times) warned them about their new slumlord. This family has 8 children. In a small 3 bedroom house. With one bathroom. I don't think all the kids are living there, I heard one of the kids mention his nephew to my son so I think some are old enough to have their own place. I do hope these people are better than everyone who has lived there. I did see they are painting the living room so they're trying to fix it up a bit inside. Both my husband and son warned them of all the mold in the basement. They said they didn't see any, but they told my husband the walls all have panelling on them downstairs. My husband told them that's new and wonders if they just covered it up. They are going to get city inspectors in to see if they can use their meters to detect mold. Wish us luck. With this many kids and our bedroom window just 10 feet from their back yard, I'm worried I won't get any sleep this summer when school is out. I get up at 5:15 for work so I'm in bed usually by 9.......See MoreDesperate for help on the ENTIRE front of my house!
Comments (45)A lot of these comments seem to assume you can just apply some finish or feature that is attractive on a completely different house style and it will look fine. It won’t. I like the trim and siding colors you chose. The low contrast plays down the 70’s-ness of the rear elevation, without attempting to pretend the house is something it’s not. The dark trim also looks great with what I assume are dark windows that can’t be painted. Removing the brick hardscaping seems like a bad idea, it’s a very nice feature. I would not go to the expense of replacing the brick siding with stone. But covering the brick siding with blue wood siding and cladding the brisk low wall with stone might look good if you really, really can’t live with any of the brick. I would do the siding first, though. Because maybe the rest of the brick will then look OK to you. You could try painting the brick to match the siding first, but that may end up being unsatisfactory. I agree with adding lights, but please don’t choose a craftsman style....See MoreHouse interior color scheme
Comments (12)Thank you all for the suggestions. I spent about 3 hours in the home during inspection, in the afternoon, a few weeks ago. I'm in Chicago, and, Blfenton, the lighting is exactly as you describe (maples, birch, ornamentals fall color). For that reason, and because of the exterior of the home, I'm hesitant to do warm yellow or other brown-based earth tones because the lot is deep but narrow, and there are trees on both sides. The feel of the house just lends itself to lighter colors. I won't be able to get back inside before closing because one of the current family members is immune-compromised, and showing the house was stressful enough for them. So I'm going to wait to decide on wall color until I move in, but Bbstx, Alabaster looks like a strong contender. I also need to see the trim color again. It was in good shape and mostly just needed touch-ups rather than total repainting, so I'll probably work around it. Yes, that wallpaper above is more green now that I look at it again. I may need to focus more on greens and blues. I like the idea of sage green, because it transitions among the seasons more, especially during the holidays. Thanks for all the good wishes. I know this year has been so difficult for so many, and I'm fortunate to have this diversion....See MoreRelated Professionals
