What to do with the furnace and brick wall

The brick wall is in my living room along with the furnace. Not sure if I want to paint it, add shelves, or cover it. Would like some ideas. Thank you.

I like modern and minimal style. Mostly clutter free spaces with no other knick-knacks except a few center pieces.

Since the walls are rocked, it's a little late to address changes in the duct system. Hopefully, manuals J & D were addressed to optimize your system. You should inquire as to the type of furnace (number of stages). Model numbers would be nice. Since you have a large house, how will a single stage unit handle things if only one zone is calling for heat. Is there a dump zone? Would a third zone give you better control? Unfortunately, the best time to address this would have been at or before signing the agreement of sale (after doing a lot of research). Now, you're kind of at his mercy. How about air conditioning? Other home qualities are excellent (insulation, windows, slab heat for basement). If basement is to be air conditioned, will need to have controllable supply and return registers (off in winter). I have seen at least two episodes of Weekend Warriors on HGTV where the homeowners have drywalled over the brick wall. One just re-aired yesterday. In both cases the couples went from a full wall of brick to just a mantle and surround with the remaining wall being drywalled and painted. Drywall is a very inexpensive alternative if you're tired of the brick look. Also you can just paint the brick if you choose to go that route.

We took a walk through the neighborhood this past weekend , and I finally figured out why the rock wall is there (sort of). Almost all the homes have some sort of rock wall formation on their property, and I believe it’s because the neighborhood is built on a mountain top, so the various builders all seemed to have utilized in some form or fashion all the rock that was excavated during the building process. I think once we find a solution for the red brick, the wall won’t be as big of an eyesore and flow a little better with the lot and the neighborhood. And agree absolutely about the landscaping! We’re working on it now!

You should remove the hanging string lights from the ceiling beams. Also, the lights(?) on the foyer side could be replaced with more attractive wall lanterns or sconces. — I would remove the louvered doors into adjoining rooms and then think about this ; in European homes iron gates are often used to partition interior rooms. Don’t know the budget, but I think it is the small portions of brick wall at the left and right sides which look ODD. You could have small left and right side opening gates commissioned and installed like an art installation. Short of that , ENCASE the narrow brick sections ( L&R ) with wood and make them into square columns all the way to the ceiling. A slatted partition wall could go to the ceiling at the middle portion, or a custom open shelving installation . All of these are likely expensive and complicated options, but you might be able to do just one and it would be an improvement.

What you have is a wood stove so do you need it for heating ? At the moment I see nothing very modern so what exactly do you want from us. Are you changing the floor ? How many seats do you need in the space ? The more info we get the better to help you. Is this in abasement? Is taht a skylight or something else in the center of the ceiling? Could you post a to scale floor plan?

My approach would be to change the floor to a wood, or a bamboo, or a wood look LVP or wood look linoleum. Possibly change wall color, as well - to a warm white or more of a greige, versus grey. And some streamlined seating pieces.

With a wood heater, would definitely not want carpet.

Would leave the brick wall -- the wall near the wood heater likely absorbs warmth -- a plus for brick as well as it also being a safety measure.

What you might consider is measuring the space to the right of the heater between heater and wall and then keep the brick wall mostly clear for the same space left of the heater (aside from the window already there) but beyond that on the left, consider adding a board panel with decor above the tall shelving unit you already have .. not cover the entire wall but a rectangle made of the same material you intend to use for your new flooring and then add art to that ... perhaps a pressed metal wall sculpture. Or just the art without the board.

Or, depending upon your flooring selection, just create some pattern you can create on part of a sheet of plywood (sized/cut to fit the space as art ) with your flooring selection and frame it.
