Is this a Copper Roof above Bay Window???

This bay window is 31 years old, I am not entirely sure it is copper seeing that it has yet to patina to green (not sure if being under the eave has slowed it), I am about to put in black windows but would like to know if this is just Tin, that way I can paint it black versus being copper which I would just allow to continue to patina.

Tough to be certain form the distance but copper typically patinas to a bit of a greenish color and not quite that consistent. I think you may have a top made from bronze colored metal sheets.

Can you get to it and try a magnet on it? Copper takes a long time to get green patina.

Hello, We recently moved into a house built in 2002, and the living room has a bay window with a copper roof. Recently, in a heavy rainstorm, our ceiling in there was leaking (luckily, right over the Christmas tree). I had a roof inpector take a look at the copper roof, and he said that it was the worst copper roof job he had ever seen. The roof meets the house behind the siding, which is allowing water to enter the home. The original installers also used caulk instead of soldering the seams. We currently have a proposal to have the copper roof replaced and soldered correctly, as well as the siding re-installed to achieve proper drainage -- to the tune of $2100! Does that sound right to everyone, or is there some simpler, more inexpensive way to go about this? Thank you!

Restore copper roof above bay window?

Pretty house... I'm a metal artist and have worked with a lot of copper. If you paint the copper it will be very difficult to restore later on. If you want to take off all the patina, I would use a half lemon dipped in salt which will strip the patina. Rub the lemon over the surface and what you will have left will be a bright pink oxidation which can be removed easily with 00000 steel wool. Copper is very reactive and will start to darken almost immediately so you might want to research clear coatings if you want to keep the bright color. I don't have any recommendations since I don't coat my copper pieces. You can also try using the steel wool without the lemon/salt step if you want to just bring up the copper color a little, especially on the edges.

I can take one tomorrow. Ive been using Stripeeze with a plastic scrapper. There were at least 8 layers of paint. I've got a good bit off but there must have been some kind of primer that is not reacting to the stripper.

If you remove the bay window, the head and seat board, and the exterior "roof over the window"," you will have a flat rough opening. You can work with that but it sounds like you want to shorten the width. Are you also changing the siding? How much work would it be to make the window centered? Pretty straightforward except you are going to have to patch the siding together if you aren't changing it. Also, it looks more like a bow (6" radius =/-) rather than a bay (30 or 45 degree).

I tried the magnet, it did not stick. Kept sliding off. I took a few close up pics to see if that will help.

I see a bit of green near the edge which appears to be oxidation. I think it is copper with a lacquer coating. Try stripping a portion of it to see….

Can you touch it with lemon juice? If it is copper the spot that cones in contact with the acid will turn a shinny copper color.

Copper will be dark brown for a long time before it starts to get verdigris. My copper gutters and flashing are brown. Also the copper roof on my parents' bay window was brownish black for many years and only had a little bit of verdigris. The house was 45 years old when they sold it.

That’s interesting that it takes so long to patina it’s 31 years old I won’t touch it if it’s copper.

I can see the green starting on it in your last detail picture, I agree that I think it is copper.

The existing brown goes well with the colors of your house. I would not change anything to black. You already have quite a lot going on --- the brick, the stucco with imbedded stone, the stone, and the half-timbering. The brown makes the whole look pretty cohesive. Black won't do that.

I would recommend painting the door.
