What to do? Re. asbestos glue on old wood floor
Comments (9)Thanks for the advice. Yes, even in the small spot we have uncovered, we have an oddly shaped pine patch. So maybe this will all be a moot point. If we think it's safe, I'll test with water. I think some glues are water-soluble, and others aren't. About the pros...unfortunately, sometimes even the pros don't have all the answers. A rep from a reputable, well-known flooring store told us that vinyl has no asbestos and not to worry. Well. Vinyl can (and ours did) have an asbestos paper layer. And obviously an asbestos abatement person has a vested interest in telling us that only a professional can safely remove asbestos. I'm trying to get all the info possible so I can make an informed decision. Well...I still have a call in to our asbestos guy....See MoreWarning: minor re-dos to existing kitchen can be more difficult
Comments (18)And, my latest update on the never-ending list of the unanticipated. The fabricator was out and told us that our floors and counters are not anywhere near level. If we want to keep our current backsplash, we need to take out the entire first row of backsplash so the fabricator can create a row of soapstone backsplash to fit under the current tile. This is the only way to get a level appearance and level countertops. And, because of the odd contifutation of our counters (they are of several diffenent heights) he told us that some of the existing backsplash, where the tile is cut to go around the current countertop, might need some replacement tiles........... So, what are the chances that we can actually take out that row of tiles without actually breaking tiles above them? Probably pretty low. So, this may now also mean an all new backsplash. More work and more money. All because I said I just wanted to do a quick upgrade to our counter tops..........See MoreHelp me re-do kitchen plan
Comments (24)Home- Nice layout! I really like all the example pictures you posted, too. It's so much easier to see if something will work in the space, with a picture. My only concern is no sink in the fridge/snack area, but that's what Control said she wanted. There was a prep sink in the snack area, in the earlier plan (kitchen on other side) and I wonder if it's going to be too crowded having both sinks (and dishwasher, etc.) so close to the cooking area. Personally, I'd like to see a window on the short wall (between the laundry room and family room) and somehow incorporate the prep sink into this corner. A view and more light would be really nice. If Control doesn't mind an 'island' hood, than I'd think about putting the range on the peninsula, so you can see into the dining area and the family room. Since you don't have seating planned for this area (stools on family room side) it would be a lot safer with the range here...and you could have bookshelves/display facing the dining room. A raised backsplash would hide a bit of the mess and keep things from falling off the back of the counter, too. Maybe something like this? Yet again, I'm running out of white out, so I hope this is readable. Basically, same back wall, with prep sink in the corner (like Circuspeanut) and a window on the side overlooking the backyard...and the range on the peninsula. The wine fridge is by the door to the mudroom, but still handy to the prep sink. There should be room for some big drawers, where the range used to be...and between the wine fridge and the prep sink. A trash could go just left of the prep sink (to the right of the drawers) and still have a lazy susan in the other corner. You should have at least one, just for the extra storage...great for punch bowls and other rarely used items. From Cottage house plans...See MoreKitchen/Laundry room re-do
Comments (3)It looks like shelves are the only things you CAN do in the laundry room. You might want to go through sites like houzz and decor pad to get some style ideas. I like the idea of extending the island, but maybe cut the extension down to just 24" or 36" wide instead of the 44.5". If not, I think the walkway between island and banquette seats looks too narrow. NKBA says at least 44" to walk behind a seated person. If you don't put chairs on the outside of the banquette, that might work. Can you repost just the kitchen with measurements, aisle measurements, etc.? You would get more comments..
