Kitchen Island Single Pendant Lighting

We want to update our pendant lighting. I think we need to go larger for a more modern, current look. I'd also like to make the entire area lighter looking (not necessarily bring more light into this area). Almost everything I see seems to have the bare bulb showing, which seems just harsh to us. Yes, those amber edison bulbs can be pretty - but they really don't have much light output and how long are they going to stay in style.

The photos show more yellow and dark than the area really is. They yellow walls are probably going to be painted soon (something entirely neutral in case we decide to sell the house). And I bringing in some blue to those lights would work well with the rest of the great room.

Ideas??? Not looking to spend big bucks.

However, I would consider one of two options

1- no pendants at all.

2- make a straight island and do two or three large pendants.

My reason for the above suggestion is the current light set up accentuates the pendants. And limits the size.

Thank you for the reply. I agree that the current island limits the size of the pendants. But ripping out a perfectly good granite island to get bigger pendants. . . Ah, no. And I would lose some of the island seating which we use VERY frequently.

I think a larger black tone lantern would look great. You have only a single light box.. I wouldn't do three. I would personally do one or two decent size lanterns left and right. The size and width of the island would need to be known if you are hanging multiples. Many different lanterns out there in black. I favor the Darlana by Visual Comforts. It's very well made and has more straight lines than the mock up above. The iron on the one above across the top each piece is slightly rounded. This is Darlana however obviously showing in the gold tone. It's available in dark, gold and silver tone. With a lantern the ceilings will need to be fairly high.

I don't have pendents or recessed lighting - so no help there, but if you don't have under cabinet lighting, add that to your list. My under cabinet lighting is the most helpful lighting I have. At a guess, I would say 2 pendants over the island, but your lighting store should also be able to help you. It depends on what you use and if your recessed lights light up the island - then pendants aren't necessary. Change out the track light over the sink for sure.

We like to put one (or more) recessed lights around the island if it includes a work surface (sink or cooktop). The recessed light should be switched separately from the pendants so that it can be turned off when not needed.

Well, if you dont want light in your eye clear globes is not the way to go, white milk glass will not glare in someone's eye it would be diffused. If you like the open bottom look go with the smaller one. you could keep searching "brass warehouse or barn light pendant" you might find more similar to that with a stem. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kichler-Cobson-12-in-Natural-Brass-Industrial-Single-Warehouse-Pendant/999906785 something like this would get you the width but less height OR go with something on chain rather than stem, because that woud let you be more flexable on the hanging height. https://www.shadesoflight.com/products/classic-dome-large-shade-pendant-light

um.. dont go clear you will loose valuable light. those are line voltage pendants from cal lighting, you could just change the glass.https://www.calighting.com/up-1037-6-ru-up-1037-6-ru.html
