Exterior help - paint full house, limewash brick, just paint siding?
Comments (10)@Zone4 yeah, I think I'm starting to realize that the brick probably helps break up the facade and keep it interesting. I'm starting to be really intrigued with the limewashing idea. If it turns out we could paint the windows, would you do black or white? I like the idea of a black/charcoal, but have also heard that is the worst color on vinyl windows. @aprilneverends it has been hard to really get the colors across from the listing pics. Basically it is 50 shades of unappealing (to me at least) tan inside and out. So I want a dramatic change, but I know people are really torn about changing brick, so I'll probably have my husband mockup a version with the brick and a dark greige paint to see how that looks alongside a limewashed version. Front door, yes, that thing has a big stain glass Texas star that doesn't help anything. I was thinking one of the modern doors with 3-5 satin horizontal lites to keep some light coming in from the door, then finding a complimentary garage door. For the French doors, I definitely won't change my mind on the divided lites - however they are just an overlay on top of a solid piece of glass, so one of the contractors said you could just pop them off. One set of doors needs a new handle, the other needs about $300 in repair work and weatherproofing, so that is why I'm debating whether or not to rehab these versus put in new ones. And if we replace, I don't know if sliding glass doors that let in tons of light or new French doors with the thinnest frame possible would look best. I know landscaping will have a huge impact too, and could really turn this into a more modern looking house. The bones are certainly good, and it is plain enough that we can subtly take it in a couple directions, just trying to narrow down what will look best while also being somewhat our style....See MorePlease give me ideas for exterior siding on new build
Comments (26)Shead - I've been thinking about your suggestion to swing the garage out (similar to the first photo) and I think it's a good suggestion. It will also resolve the roof issue that PPF mentioned. I'll take that up with my designer when I meet with her next month. Do you have any suggestions for siding as well? Cpartist - The kitchen in the plans is just a preliminary concept that my house designer included. I've since met with a certified kitchen designer to create a detailed kitchen plan - the plan now includes a sink in the island. Re: east/west axis. There were several factors we considered with direction. Our property is south of the road. We want to see the front of the house when we drive up the driveway, not the back or sides of the house (if you look at the first drawing I posted, you'll see what I mean. Keep in mind that the driveway actually has a much slighter curve than that depicted in the drawing). We could turn the house so that the large expanses of glass in the kitchen, great room and basement living room face west, but I don't want the late setting sun to shine into those room at that angle (I have that in my current office, and it's very aggravating - I have to close my blinds to work in there later in the afternoon and evening). That being said, I'm open to reading your ideas about how the house should be situated. Patricia Colwell - You stated that the interior needs work - can you be more specific? I like the layout of the house (although I definitely like the idea of changing the direction of the garage). What exactly is it that you think needs work? bot494 - Thank you!!! You are one of the few who actually provided an answer to my original question, and I really appreciate it! I love the look of Hardie, but I've read so many bad reviews online that I'm leery of going there (the contractors I've talked to also don't recommend it). The LP Smartside sounds similar to the Maibec siding we are looking at. Can you get it prepainted? (the Maibec comes either stained or painted). I like the idea of using both lap and vertical - what colour(s) would you suggest? Or do you think a natural wood stain on all the siding will look good?...See MoreIdeas for new exterior siding paint color to go with existing trim
Comments (25)Thanks Beverly! The timbers are actually painted in the same chocolate brown color as the window and roof line trim as well as gutters. And the house is painted wood (been painted several times over the years house circa 1980) although we've only been here two years and inherited the bad peachy sandy beige siding and chocolate brown trim. I agree the darker pic you attached is appealing. Right now I'll be taping up several colors I've picked up. They range from mid toned to darker grays mostly with a green undertone. (I'll post some pics this afternoon.) And we don't see a choice of keeping the chocolate brown trim if we really want to enhance the appeal of the house. So we really ought to get rid of the chocolate brown trim for good--which will include also replacing the gutters and downspouts to a different color (they need replacing anyhow). I'm attaching a closer image of the timbers in the front door area and one looking in from the driveway to the front deck. After paint, trim and gutter color is chosen, we'll tackle a paint color the front door. It's scary now as it has some sort of faux finish with actual leaves embedded and painted over. Since it's an oversized custom door size we are trying to fix it rather than replacing it. The front door is to the immediate right in the deck pic. The two doors in deck photo lead to the dining room and the other to the kitchen. Will also replace light fixtures. It's always a domino effect major project to redo an exterior but it's sorely needed. Thank you again for your time, interest and sharing of talent....See MoreLooking to update & modernize house exterior. Siding? Stonework Ideas?
Comments (5)Thank you for your suggestions Patricia. There is a circular driveway that is hard to see from the picture we posted so I'm not sure how a walkway would work as it would have to cut across the driveway. We currently have asbestos shingles and have painted them 3 times over the last 20 years. I think they kind of make the house feel dated. The small windows are from our master bedroom redo 20 years ago. They were actually very modern looking when we put them in. I'm attaching a picture of how they look over our bed, but your right they do appear small from the outside....See MoreBeth H. :
