New plan with the silver maple
Comments (6)but I decided to just leave whatever there alone. ===>>> pure genius ... lol .. dont fix what aint broken, as they say .. as to bulbs.. a tulip should be around 6 inches deep.. or about 3X its diameter ... go out under the tree in june/july/august... and dig a couple 6 inch holes.. and find out if ANY water is getting that deep ... and if its bone dry.. the bulbs will probably fail over time ... what is there is rather shallow rooted mat forming plants.. that really dont put roots that deep into the fibrous root system of the tree.. and that is why they can succeed ... so while trying to dream up idea under there.. work with that.. rather than thinking about invading the deeper root mass.. and trying to out compete the maple ... as a hosta grower.. trust me.. you will not beat a large maple in its root zone ... make any sense??? ken...See Moredo ground silver maple stumps sprout?
Comments (4)Thanks for the responses. Well, I ended up deciding to get the stumps and main roots pulled up - a man came with a "skidster" - okay - I did not realize how much this would compact the ground around the work area. Lots of lawn also torn up - those roots were massive. I am glad the trees were cut as out driveway and sidewalks would have been affected in a few years. So, with ripping all those roots out I was able to plant replacement trees right away - we needed to put something in these areas. So then I had the pleasure of learning how to plant grass seed in the damaged areas. Thankfully we are now blessed with cool rainy weather for several days. Okay, now ready to stop landscaping for a while!...See MoreCan my Silver Maple be saved?
Comments (14)I grew up in a neighborhood in northern OH where silver maples had been planted by the developer in many front yards during the 50s. My folks' house was the last one to still have a silver maple and theirs lasted less than 50 years. Most were gone within 15 or 20 years, lost to storm damage. The oaks are still growing and healthy. I now live along a river where silver maples grow naturally. Many have damage, but it isn't a problem where they are sited, not near houses or as the sole tree in a yard. My view is that a silver maple is a beautiful tree in the wild, but has no business in a suburban yard or anywhere near buildings. Several acres would be a good size for a property with a silver maple because they will lose limbs, large and small, in most any storm, causing damage to structures and vehicles. They are not able to take normal yard tree use, like being climbed by kids, without limbs breaking. I like the suggestion of getting another tree or two established and then remove the silver maple. You might consider a pergola, an awning, or another structure to provide you shaded places to sit or to help keep the house cooler....See MoreSilver Maple decision
Comments (3)The new "branch" is the new leader sprouting from the same root collar, this is not a sucker like an Aspen, Sumac or altissima tree will utilize. Sounds like the tree is damaged or deseased somewhere above where it has leaves. The new leader is a sign that the tree is essentially trying to start over. The old branches may die back more. You may not want to wait a few years to find out though. Might want to have an arborist take a look at the tree for desease or pests....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
