Smallest possible container for Roma tomatos??
Comments (3)sephira, people used to grow tomatoes in a 5 gallon bucket... with the tomatoe sticking out of the bottom. Drill a hole about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter in the bottom of the bucket. Hang the bucket so you can work with it. Stick the little plants root end through the hole...you will need something that will decompose like newspaper to wrap around the stem to hold in place and keep the potting soil from running out, also. Fill it with potting soil to whatever depth you think good enough...a 3 gallon bucket might work...you could try both. Water well and hang up... much easier picking and no tying....See Morecan i grow corn in a balcony container 5 ft away from tomatoes?
Comments (5)There should be no problem growing your corn in proximity to the tomatoes. It's surely not how I would choose to use that valuble real estate, though. We've been bringing home the most delicious sweet corn from the farmers ' market for a couple of weeks. But that's me! I'd use that precious space for a couple different kinds of basil and some other herbs. So what kind of corn are you interested in growing and how many plants will your container accomodate? I know you'll have fun....See MoreWhat's the smallest pressure canner I can get?
Comments (20)I'm thinking I should just use the Fagor for cooking, and use the water bath for canning. Am I really missing out on alot by not canning with pressure? I don't think I would ever can a huge variety of items, although I do have a large garden. Most things I end up freezing. Then the odds are that no, you wouldn't be missing out on much. Pressure canning is in some ways a whole different world of canning and it doesn't appeal to all. IMO it expands the canning horizon 10 fold and I'd never want to be without it - waaay too limiting. ;) We do lots of meats, all sorts of beans, carrots, mixed vegetables, etc. that can't be done in a BWB and for us canned goods have a much longer shelf life then frozen, better flavor in many respects, never have to worry about lost electricity, or running out of freezer room. But that is just us. As Lizzy said above, never do it and get along just fine. PC is geared to vegetables (other than tomatoes), meats, and mixed low acid foods so if you elect to freeze all those things instead that's fine. Tomatoes aren't safer if done in a PC, just much faster to can. BWB tomatoes with the added acid is just fine. Just so you recognize that it is an either/or situation - you can't pressure can without the proper equipment. And as discussed above, while the Fagor may be great for cooking, it isn't an approved canner. So use it for cooking and keep on freezing and BWB acid foods OR invest in the 16 qt. Presto (cheaper anyway) and take up pressure canning. OK? Hope this helps. Dave...See MoreSmallest Container Size for a Habanero Plant
Comments (14)The size of the pot will directly affect how big and bushy your plant gets. A good example, I grew bhuts in containers this year (first set got killed, had to start a new batch several months into the season, needed to be able to bring them inside if needed), and while I gave most of them away to friends and family, I kept two. One is in a 10" pot. Its rather spindly, not very bushy at all, but it does have all of two peppers on it right now. The other is in a 20" pot, and it is roughly twice the size of the 10" pot one, very bushy, lots of leaves, and must have a good two dozen pods or more on it right now. So, moral of this tale is "The bigger your pot, the better your plant". They'll grow and produce small amounts of fruit in a small container, but peppers have big root systems, the more room you give them, the better you'll be in the long run. Since you're going to have to bring those in (if they're still small now, there's no way you'll get ripe fruit before it freezes up there in NY), just go with the biggest container you have space for by the window....See MoreArtist-FKA-Novice Zone 7B GA
