Hello everyone! This forum is always very helpful! I'm looking for suggestions on landscaping for the front of the house. I think my house is a South facing house so I have plenty of sun light. Not sure if there is a science behind it ...

Was thinking of doing hyrdrea and Myrtle trees under the big windows, in the back and something small on front but open for ideas. And along the path small bushes and flowers.

Looking for plants that are least maintenance saved come back every year.

Any other design website or suggestions are welcomed! Thank you!

A few questions.....
- Confirm the aspect...does the house face south or not? It makes a difference with plant suggestions.
- Where are you located geographically? That also has a major impact on plant suggestions.
- "hyrdrea and Myrtle trees"....do you mean hydrangeas? And can you be more specific about what a myrtle tree is? Various plants have that common name.
- Finally, can you a post a photo (or a clear scaled sketch) of the available planting areas? There is no way to determine from the photo how much room you have to plant anything.

Why the huge parking pad to nowhere using up most of the front yard?I agree we need a lot more info but usually my suggestion is go the garden center where you live to get info as to what will grow in your yard and area. The easy way to tell which way you face is to tell us where the sun sets when we are facing the house.

I planted a Dave Wilson 4 in 1 pluot tree at my parents house this spring(late March). They live 15 mins from me. And although there was no fruit this year( I picked off all the flowers this first year) all four grafts have grown at least 4 foot in length with multiple shoots. And once I pruned it in the middle of June multiple side shoots have shot out. So I'm very enthusiastic about them thriving here. I received them in December and kept them in the shed so they felt the cold here. The only problem I've had here and at my parents house is Japanese beetles but since there was no fruit a sprayed them with Sevin and they haven't return. I'm in Missouri not Minnesota. But still we've had a very unusual wet and very humid start to our summer here.

My house has the same problem with plows. Worse, the DOT salts the road when there's a thread of snow or ice! So the runoff kills pretty much anything. I LOVE your wall, though! So there's a lot of potential here. After trying a million things, I ended up just using mondo grass. That stuff is indestructible!! I've sprayed it with Round Up, and I swear I can hear it laugh! LOL It's good in sun or shade, and I've never watered it once. I don't even plant it; I just dig up a bunch and sit it where I want it, and it will root itself. https://www.monrovia.com/mondo-grass.html My suggestion would be mondo grass along the base of the wall, and then dwarf mondo grass to the road if you can find it. You can then plant annuals between the mondo grass in the Spring. And since they'll die at the end of Autumn, anyway, there's no real loss over the Winter. Only downside is that, maybe one a year, you'll need to take a shovel down there and dig up any of the mondo grass that's outgrown where you want it.

@simplynatural's suggestion about changing the entrance is a much better idea than just landscaping around existing structure. As is there needs to be some way to get to the steps on the left but changing the steps to the front is very appealing. I would definitely change the lattice, it doesn't look great under the vertical railing. I would also change the trim color around the lower door & garage door to match the upper trim. Paint the front door on the porch a color you love (all colors will go with your siding color) to make the entrance stand out. Leave the lower accessory door same color as trim. If you can add a row of windows to the garage door and paint it trim color.

I suggest you visit a local garden center for advice ( not HD , etc.) Landscape design is best accomplished ON SITE. Too many variables to consider other than just your zone, orientation , etc.

for balance I would create the same planter bed on both sides, add a fence to the right side. I would not do a walkway bed it's a little out of balance for that. I would just focus on the plants and possibly put

Yes the house is South facing
It's in Lynbrook, NY so we get all 4 seasons

Since we can't park cars on the street overnight we wanted a big pad also because I have a boy son who loves to play ball.

Eventually I wanted to install a pathway going to the back yard just not now ...

And they built that planterbed because of the paversso they didn't make it on the other side....

I'm thinking of doing talll plants in the back and v smaller ones in the front.

Will go to a design center this weekend to learn more about it

then I wouldn't landscape until you can build the matching planter/walkway.
