Kitchen Layout review & suggestions please
Comments (18)Sorry for the delay in responding; I was away till this morning. bmorepanic: Thank you for taking the time to rework the plan. The hot water rads never get too hot so we're ok that way. Silly I know... I admit that the reason I didn't want to go around the corner with cabinetry etc was to keep that end wall clear to have a place to display my artwork. We do need 2 chairs & table. Currently we have a 54" round table (pre this house purchase) with 2 chairs and it is a very tight fit with a utility cart too behind the north chair along the long wall. Definitely a tight fit. We've been living with it for 7 1/2 years so downsizing to a 28" square bistro style will feel positively spacious! I close the door when seated at the table, but have thought of putting in a pocket door instead. David: I hadn't thought of an island 3 different widths. I'll give it a try. laxsupermom: Due to placement of stairs to the basement & to upstairs attic/loft bedroom the DR door can't be moved over. The appliances have all been ordered. I went with the KA convection micro/oven combo for the features of having a dual oven without having to purchase a double. buehl: I don't mind at all the personal question. I realize I should have given more background. My DH & I are empty nesters (mid 50's). Our 2 children (1 grandchild - 2yrs) live at a distance and visits to here are about 4 times a year for a weekend duration. I have a non-functioning ankle (fusion or ankle replacement hopefully in my future). This causes issue with inability to bend correctly from the knee to reach down & lifting. A raised oven will be so much easier & safer. This injury also causes instability in balance, so having to move only a couple of steps when carrying anything hot like pasta water to dump in the sink is important. A place to sit to chop veggies etc is necessary from time to time. jejvtr: Good question about soundproofing, but not an issue. The music studio is only a couple of steps down from the kitchen level, cinderblock wall with the hallway in between and a door on each side. It is almost completely soundproof. lascatx: I mixed up my dates and the cabinet guy comes next Saturday. It's good the hear from someone who has lived with a similar setup. Even though I'm the only cook, there is at times 2 of us trying to do things in there at the same time. Thank you everyone. I will take all your suggestions & work on more layouts and see what revisions I can make that will make me happy. Jazzie...See MorePlease help with kitchen layout open for all suggestions
Comments (7)The space is really tight between the sink and stove. If you end up keeping the stove there, you will need to have something fireproof on the wall only 3" to the left of it like tile or stainless. Did you design your kitchen with the online IKEA planner? If not, I suggest you give it a try. It might help you better visualize how things will look and function than on paper (it allows you to see your design in 3D). And then you can email yourself a link which you can post here so we can pop in and check it out and might result in better suggestions. How big are you in keeping the sink centered under the window? This made more sense in the pre-DW era when people spent a lot of time at the sink washing up. Now most people find that they spend more time on prep than cleaning. Consider moving the sink to the right and put that 30" cabinet where the sink is. Your DW will be on the end. This at least gives more room between sink and stove so two people can be cooking/cleaning without crowding for the same space to stand in. It also gives you more of what is considered the most precious counter space in a kitchen, between sink and stove for prepping. I can't speak to the issue of angling the stove in the corner. I know I've read many posts here on GW advising not to put a sink in the corner as it apparently isn't very convenient to work on in a corner. But I'm unsure if the same issues apply to stoves. However, I would definitely not move the stove to the corner unless you move that sink farther to the right as they would be even closer together and two people in the kitchen would be knocking elbows. Is your stove also on an outside wall? A stove on the outside wall is much easier to vent your exhaust to the outside. For this reason, I think you might want to put your stove where I previously suggested you move your sink. It can even be more to the right with just a 15, 18, or 21" counter on the right of it. Move your sink to where your stove is. Then put your DW where the 24" cabinet is on the fridge wall, closest to that unmovable corner. This would allow you to reach the DW from the sink. And would lessen congestion between the clean-up area and the cooking area. And you still have that nice, long counter expanse between stove and sink. I'm sure someone else will come along and give you better ideas but that's the best I can come up with. Best wishes....See MorePlease help me with my kitchen layout. Any suggestions welcome!
Comments (8)Thank you sena01, Jillius and mama goose. My computer is down as we had to pack up the desk or the family room flooring so I had to take a photo on my phone of the plans I have with more dimensions. Since we are moving our kitchen to a new location, window sizes can be changed. I think a 48x36 would work above my sink window. Sadly, the window will now face the side of our house which isn't super attractive.. Just a fence and some vines. I have plans for a Prep sink on the island but I'm not sure what size I should get. I originally thought a 66" island might give me more breathing room as opposed to 72" but will that make for a functional island? A peninsula could be a possibility, but I worry that I will always be walking around it when setting the table or clearing as the new dining table/area will go to the right if the beverage bar. The family room/dining room is 28 ft long. The family room is long and narrow (11 ft wide where the fireplace is and 15 ft where the fireplace ends...where my family room will be. Where the plans show where the steam combi oven will go, I can chance the cabinet to a 24" as opposed to the 30" shown. Thank you so much for all of your suggestions! If you can see the attached photo, I would love more suggestions. -Susanne...See MoreKitchen layout help and suggestions, please.
Comments (2)not a pro but here are a few thoughts. if you could close the laundry door (it seems there is another door,, but the present configuration may be practical for other reasons) I would reconfigure the kitchen as a u shaped kitchen and get rid of the peninsula or shorten it. Otherwise, I would move the fridge at the other end of the wall, shorten the peninsula for better access, slide the stove and two counter tops to the right. in this case, I would see if I can move the door a few inches to the left. but I would wait a few months before changing to see how the present configuration works, what you like or not....See Morejenniferlovejoy
