Cloe Tile Spacing Issue Feedback

We have a fairly large shower that is being tiled in Cloe, laid vertically. Before I bring this up to the contractor, I’d like second opinions.

I know the tile is irregular (or rather, not rectified)…don’t know the term for it.

Is it normal to have spacing like this? It’s not everywhere which is why it’s noticeable. We’re using a white grout so maybe it will hide any spacing issues, and assuming the spacing doesn’t create adhesion or issues with water, then it’s fine. I know absolutely nothing about this stuff and don’t want to bring it up if it’s normal. Hate seeming like a micromanager.

Thoughts please?

But I’m assuming it’s on purpose.

The walls or ceiling or floor is probably not 1000% even, which is normal.
And with this layout you will see it.
He probably cut all the top row of tile the exact same size (I think I agree with that)

Hope I’m making sense.

It’s the tile. No two are exactly alike. White grout is the correct choice.

Personally, I would not move the DW to the other side of the sink, rather, I would move that drawer stack (or trash pullout). That would: (1) Place the trash pullout right where you need it most - in the Prep Zone and next to the Cooking Zone, (2) Make it easier to reach the trash while cleaning up as well (no dodging around an open DW), (3) Give you 39" to 42" of prep space b/w the corner and the sink (18" trash pullout + 12" drawer base or tray cabinet + 12" or 9" of the corner susan - see later about the susan's dimensions), and (3) Put your Prep Zone in front of the window. Most people spend at least 70% of their time prepping and only 20% cleaning up. The other 10% is spent cooking. I'd rather place the Zone I spend the most time in in front of the window....and that means the Prep Zone (with the sink next to it). Is the corner susan a 36"x36" corner susan? If it is not, I would seriously consider making it that size. Yes, you can get 36"x33" susans, but the front opening is smaller and may or may not be big enough for what you plan to store there. Decide what you will store in the corner susan and be sure the smaller opening will work for you. Many of us here have found that corner susans are great for storing pots & pans and/or small appliances. I really wish you could get mores space b/w the range and doorway, but unless you're willing/able to move doorways, I don't see a way to do that and still keep the Cooking Zone out of the path b/w the Foyer and the rest of the house. If you find that a 33"x36" corner susan will work for you, I would switch the 33" side to the range side. That would give you a 15" cabinet on the other side of the range...at least that's another 3" of safety zone and emergency landing space b/w the range and Foyer doorway.

I did my wood to tile transition without strips (in order to make my place more handicap-friendly.) They just have to make the top surface of the tile and the top surface of the wood be the same height, I think I have about 1/8th inch difference at most between kitchen and living space, no difference between hallway and bath, and 1/8th difference at most between master and master bath. Back at my old home, I had a transistion strip between the dining area and the kitchen - it made it horrible to move from the linoleum of the kitchen back out to the wood of the dining area when I had a broken ankle and was on wheels. Plus the strips really do look ugly. (PS< the wood transition strips look fine, but mine were metal strips... but neither are necessary.) Others have pointed out you can have hardwood throughout, I just simply didn't want to do that. (Actually, my wood floors are broad beam pine, which is soft, anyway.) My build is semi-open, so I had the option in the kitchen to do tile, and so I did.

Hi everyone! We are installing white cloe tile in our kitchen but don’t want the kitchen to feel too “sterile”. I’ve been reading through the comments on many cloe posts and am leaning towards laticrete bright white grout. Despite the name, it seems like a warmer white? Anyone who has used this color grout, do you agree? Would this be a good option for us? If anyone has an other recommendations, I’m open to hearing them. To add to his helpful post, I teared Mapei Eggshell(Refered to as White in this thread) vs Mapei Avalanche and it was clear to me Eggshell blended better. Though Avalanche did match my sw pure white walls better. Ultimately for the most seemless look I went with the Mapei Eggshell, and here are the results. Really happy with it. It's still drying a little so the color might brighten a tiny bit more

Did you purchase cheap tile? This is common to have unequal sizes with low quality tile. Your tilesetter may be able to remove a couple of these and install better fitting tiles.

To answer your question regarding grout, it will minimize this certainly but you will still see it since you already know there is a gap difference.

@top drawer - not cheap…not marble-expensive, but we bought it from Bedrosians and it was like $7.60 a square foot + a few hundred for shipping.

I know it’s the nature of this kind of tile to be a little uneven, but when we had it installed in our kitchen, the tile guy (a different one) made up distance between each of them, instead of with one or two, so it didn’t look obvious. If the white grout will hide it, then I’m not going to say anything. It is A LOT of tile to lay - I’d go cross eyed if I had to spend days looking at it.

Based on the overall - I would be happy. The general lines (both horizontal and vertical) look straight and the walls are likely not 100% square. White grout was a good choice for the tile variability. Keeping the lines straight on a tile that has this much variability is hard and I would say he did a good job. Note the consistent tile slice on the left and that means he probably had to make small adjustments left / right to make that happen and he did so while maintaining stright vertical lines.

Same with the same size pieces he used to end at the time and it's obvious that the ceiling isn't perfect.
