Best, Longest, Weirdest, Favorite Rose Names
Comments (48)I love JonÂs and AltoramaÂs, findings and Erasmus Buddha Clothing Fragrance is superbly weird all right, LOL. I have serious trouble to pronounce Reigierungsrat (the other part is easy) despite having couple of years of German at the university, alas that was a long time ago. For longest names one cannot beat the French mainly gallicas. I donÂt find weird SDLM or Rosa Mundi at all, though SDLMÂs other name Queen of Beauty and Fragrance is very fitting. I love both names not to mention the rose. I truly loved to get Tipsy for the name as well as for the beauty seen on the photos. I wonder about its said wonderful fragrance though. It's not an OGR and it's not a long name but weird (to me, at least) all right: when I saw "Comtesse Vandale" listed by Vintage I had to order it to see what kind of vandalism a Comtesse is capable of doing in my yard. A modern rose I would never grow because of its weird, obviously not favorite, name is "Social climber". A saw a few of the human kind and they weren't pretty....See MoreReport: Black Walnut Rose Plantings
Comments (28)I have had the same issue with the native pecan trees, in Texas. The oak leaf hydrangea lasted three years. I love roses, but haven't tried them, yet. I didn't want liriope, but it moved in, and is doing quite well, much to my chagrin. But I have a thing about removing living things, so there they are! 😀 I've experimented with several native plants, and have found that yaupon, Turk's cap, (aka Mexican apple) does well, as do Christmas fern, St. John's wort, and artemisia. Daffodils, lily of the valley, and bearded iris have survived thirty years, with absolutely no help, as have the rosemary bushes. Oak trees, redbuds, and Eve's necklace have been next to the pecan trees, for thirty, to fifty years. Sadly, the mints, bee balm, and lemon balm only made it two years. On the upside, I've seen non-natives that have survived at least twenty-five years, such as Japanese boxwoods, nandinas, and ligustrums. The gardenia bush died within three months, even though I pampered it. Juglone is a real bugger, but the pecan tree is our state tree, the birds love them, and they provide a squirrel circus that is often hilarious! Loved your article, Hawkeye_Belle! I love roses so much, and I've spent thirty years wondering whether my pecan trees would do them in. You've provided some excellent information!...See MoreA rose for my Mom
Comments (25)I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm still fairly young and hope to have many more years with my Mom who is practically my best friend, but who knows how much more time we'll be given? This is Duchesse de Brabant. I hope you are able to enjoy many sweet memories....See MoreWho is blooming in your garden in November.
Comments (54)Carol & Ben, I find the fragrance of Doris Day to be a nice (maybe a little fruity?) medium classic rose fragrance. Depends on the time of day, as usual. I have two of them, one in full sun year-round, and one that gets a bit more shade. I've never detected an anise fragrance like Julia Child. Doris is a bit taller than my Julia, but my Julia Child stays at or below 3 feet. So maybe Doris might reach 4 feet. Doris blooms a lot, even better than Julia. All are grafted. As I was leaving today around 2 pm for a Christmas party, I noticed that the Just Joey was fully open, and I wanted to take a pic, but I was in a hurry. JJ is in a spot that doesn't get a lot of sun at this time of year. Carol, to me, that color on Yves Piaget is pretty normal most of the year. Maybe a smidge darker than in warmer temps, but not by much. Monet is a really rare one that has a wonderful fragrance and a unique look....See MoreKes Z 7a E Tn
