Microwave Location Advice
Comments (10)Since the 26" pantry is right next to the refrigerator and on the periphery of the kitchen, I would definitely put the MW on a shelf in that pantry. This location is ideal: * It's in the kitchen next to the refrigerator/freezer for warming/defrosting/cooking food * It's easily accessed from the DR/LR/rest of home for snacking w/o interfering with work going on in the kitchen As to height, I think the ideal height is b/w your waist and chest...easy to look in & stir and easy to take out w/o bending over. If you have younger children, it's at a height that will work for them around the age when they're old enough to use it. The only downside I see with this location is the lack of immediate landing space...if you need to take something out to stir you will have to either walk over to the peninsula or go around the refrigerator. I like to have landing space right there for a MW, but that's a personal preference. It sounds like there are other advantages from your point of view as well......See MoreWhere is your microwave located?
Comments (20)Mine languishes on a shelf in the pantry. But then, the only thing I use it for is softening ice cream or warming pancake syrup. I could probably live without it....See MoreMicrowave mystery location
Comments (6)I've gone thru hell trying to figure out where to put my MW too. I was going to put it in a cabinet over the counter also, but decided against it. We have kids who use the MW and it would be too high for them. Also just personally didn't like the way it looked. Also w/ over counter installation depth is an issue. Most upper cabinets are about 12" deep, but you need at least 16" for a mid-size MW. I didn't want my upper cabinets extending that far out over the cabinet. Finally we resized our bar area, which is 42" high, and put it under the counter there. It's a little lower than it was sitting on the counter, more like sitting it on a standard table. There are always compromises to make. My friend redid her kitchen, she went for just 1 oven, and built in the MW over that, with a pull-out board between them. This works great for her family, but I really wanted 2 ovens....See MoreCan't decide on microwave location
Comments (15)I looked at the Mieles, Ofealia. I am OK with stainless and we'll have a lot of it, but they are so modern and sleek. Ours will be a few feet from a Bluestar range so clunky and primitive would be a better match. Same problem with the Gaggenau. Too pretty. (But a side-opening door would give us clearance to not have to remove some door molding I kind of wanted to keep, or save us from moving the door altogether...) If these things came in white, I could overlook their stylistic unmatchiness. That's nice, Kimkitchy--I guess we don't really need a tall cabinet. Hadn't even though of installing under the counter. We will have pretty deep uppers so we could do that without too much pain. It might be too high for me, though, but yours looks like it's mounted lower than normal upper cabinet height? I'll look at the micro drawers. They are interesting. I think we may go with a tall cabinet anyway, though--it does put the oven and micro at more comfortable heights and gives some much-needed storage with the drawers and the spouse cabinet at the top (the spouse gets all the very high spots). But I think I have some better ideas now. Thanks!...See Morechispa
