How much room should I leave for the Dining Room?
Comments (7)Hi Jax. I am in the same position. Our kitchen is currently 11 1/2 x 12, L shaped and the dining room is 14 x 12. The dining room opens into the living room with just a decorative moulding separating the two rooms. I'm planning on taking down the wall between the dining room and kitchen and making a penisula but need to move the wall into the dining room for more space since I'll be losing the upper cabinetry. We're taking 12 - 15 inches from the dining room space. We can't take any more because we also have a very large box out window in the dining room and don't want to add to the expense of moving that window. So the dining room are will now be 13 x 12 which I think is still a decent size. Our advantage is we can extend into the living room if necessary for large get togethers. Hope this helped....See MoreHow do you furnish a small room that is a living room/kitchen combo?
Comments (4)You gotta draw it on graph paper, and then cut out pieces the size of an apartment couch, etc., and move them around. My first idea is couch facing windows with a cafe table behind the couch, and TV in the corner. You could also try couch floating with it's back to the fridge wall and bedroom hallway, and a TV on the bottom wall with a dropleaf table there too (chairs on left and top sides). It might be more flexible to try arranging 2-3 small armchairs instead of a couch, as easier to allow walkways and still have a conversational arrangement possible......See MoreHow would you furnish this huge coast living room?
Comments (10)A floor plan should be your first step, with exact measurements, etc. Find a good on line room planner and experiment with different configurations, based on how you want room to function. You won’t know what room can handle until this is done and until you have determined your needs, ie: couches, sectionals, and chair combinations. Two identical sized seating areas grounded by two rugs. Or each side different Or a really large area with a smaller intimate space Would you like seating by window, a place to nap, does a tv need to be considered, etc Once you have layout figured out, there will be all the other decisions. Size of furniture, best fabrics for your lifestyle, accessories, etc. It may be worth hiring someone and with the discounts they benefit from, it may be worth it if you are buying for the whole room from scratch...See MoreHow Would You Furnish this Side-By-Side Living Room and Family Room?
Comments (10)Thanks for trying to help. I will answer your questions which also helps me to think it through: no children, but visiting grandchildren. -it is not a new build, but a remodel of a 50’s ranch. The addition is the covered porch and the extension of the kitchen. -our “games room” (ping pong) will be in the finished basement. -my sense is that the family room is less formal than the living room and will be for relaxation and TV watching. Maybe incorporating a desk. -I could switch the family and dining but it would be an awfully large dining room that wouldn’t get much use as it’s just 2 of us most of the time. The addition will have large windows across the back. Lots more light than the room now labeled family. Planning a bench under the windows. Plus the new kitchen/dining will have a different floor from the rest of the house. If this helps and you have other ideas please share. Thanks again....See MoreLisa T
