Window above mantle - Sheetrock, brick or both?
Comments (13)The new bricks are going to need ties. The window wont allow that. It needs to come out, studded in and sheathed with a properly installed underlayment. The bricks will need to be tied into the existing by way of removing a brick every other course each side. Out here there's no way a mason would consider that small project for $1000.00 not counting insulating and matching up the wallboard inside, painting to match, etc. If you want a tv, your going to have to have cable and a receptacle access as well. I think your budget is way low and you'll be asking for moisture concerns behind the brick if you leave it which cant be done because there's nothing to tie the bricks in to. Save up and do it right or dont do it at all or it will cost you in the long run with those moisture problems if you leave the window there....See MoreRed Wall, Ebony Mantle -- what to put above it
Comments (7)Those are beautiful pictures, forhgtv, but I have one very similar to the first one, and it doesn't look right with the black and white toile lamp shades. It competes with them. Of course, I could move the lamps elsewhere BUT they look no nice on the mantle, and I just love them. Kitch n kat, the reason I mentioned a clock was because I watched an episode of Clean House, in which Mark Brunetz used a large clock over a couch and also a grandfather clock in the room. He is the one who said there are no rules about how many clocks one can use in a room, but you may be right about it being overkill. Could you (or others) HELP ME find a suitable round iron grille (in black) that would work? I like that idea. It can't be over 23 or 24 inches in diameter. I hadn't thought about a stained glass window, but I happen to have one. Trouble is, the squares are red, white and BLUE. It would be wonderful if they were red, white and black. I appreciate your help, guys....See Moremirror help above mantle
Comments (7)IMO mirrors need to reflect something worth seeing twice so what will it reflect . Id a gree a pice of art would be a much nicer choice if you insist on a mirror it needs to be wider than it is tall so the French country one does not fit that discription at all. The layered look could be interesting but again reflections are everything...See MoreAdvice request on decorating above my mantle with these high ceilings
Comments (3)Your wood mantle is far too small for the size of that wall. If I were in your shoes (and I have been), I recommend you consider having a much larger surround built....See Moreshirlpp
