Outdoor container dimensions for Japanese Maples

I generally understand the concept bonsai pots being shallow to limit the size of the tree. But what if I am planting Japanese Maples in outdoor containers that are cultivars that have a limited size appropriate for the containers? In that case I want them to grow as big as they want. Does using deeper than bonsai planters eliminate the limitation, or is size also limited by the width of the pot?

Cutting to the chase, is there a dimension I should be looking for?
