update on my window treatments
Comments (24)Jan in Wisconsin, thank you for your nice comments and advice...I have always admired your beautiful home, love that bench and those wonderful pillows. busybee3, thanks for your support for a coordinating fabric also..I know it will be difficult, but I think I would really like a coordinating fabric more than the same fabric as the living room.. I think I am leaning toward some sort of nice valances hung on finials... Would you believe that I have already changed out the solid burgundy pillows for the peacock ones? I am pleased that I am getting good feedback on those pillows anyway, as I wasn't sure how they worked with my room. Out the door to look for fabric. Thanks....See MoreHow do I make kitchen soffits fit into my elegant vision of kitch
Comments (16)I love the ideas mentioned about soffits. You can turn the soffit into a faux molding of doors. I adore Celineike's beautiful kitchen, what a creative way to deal with soffits. Here are a few more examples. Soffit into a stacked cab or even adding molding to the soffit in the pic with the yellow. All fun ideas to make the space even more beautiful. I would put some elegant drapes on the windows something like this...Not a Duncan P table but lovely nevertheless. Oriental rugs over your tile floors and rich woven drapes will make the coolness of the room flow with the duncan pyfe table you are invisioning. What about a built in fish tank? Fish tanks can take on a mood or feel of their own but built in ones remind us that they are part of the art and passion of the owner not an entitiy of their own. The built in fish tank becomes elegant art. Back to the kitchen... Here is a combo of gray and white with a gentle soffit above. That sort of blends into the wall. I thought of this when you mentioned gray. Painting soffitts above to match walls and cabs unify the space....See MoreUpdate on my living room window treatments
Comments (11)Thanks, everyone!! cyn, we bought that pheasant at an antique store that used to be local to us. Just called to get another one! It is so pretty. romy, not sure if you remember my garland dilemma. The lights on one I had and even a new one didn't match. So I ended up going fresh. I do love it, even though it is a bit messy. I mist it every morning but it is so dry! I also haven't accessorized as much as I would like but I am at a loss. Maybe next year! jjam, those shelves are going to be the death of me!! What you see now is finally fixed up! I agree they look pretty sparse. There are just so many shelves! I have left the top ones empty since I don't have enough to fill it. But something for the new year is to get more color up there. francoise, thank you so much! The "women in party dresses and smart looking men lounging" is the look I love! Very Dorothy Draper/Carlton Varney. Now, need to get on having that party!...See MoreHow can I update my kitchen cabinets???
Comments (11)Carolyn, We bought our house about 7 years ago. The kitchen was just awful when we bought it... filthy, icky, tile floor all cracked in pieces, huge non-functional island in a very small space, AND 1980's oak cabinets. We did a cosmetic renovation which lasted us until January of this year when we ripped it all out and did a complete, down to the studs renovation. for the cosmetic renovation back in 2001 we put in an oak floor, put in new countertops and a new backsplash (which was sea glass... loved it for many years and then grew sort of tired of it), painted the cabinets Benjamin Moore mayonnaise (just the outsides, you can see the insides are still oak), put on new knobs and bought new appliances (nothing fancy or high end but worlds better than what came with the house, particularly the refrigerator which had a decomposing dead bird plastered to the back of it, and lords knows what all in the crevices in the insides. In the renovation we just completed we got all of the floors on the same level and opened up the kitchen which makes it feel twice as big despite the fact that it is in the same footprint (with the exception of the china hutch cabinetry which extends beyond where our old kitchen ended). Here are some pictures of what the kitchen looked like before the cosemetic renovation: notice the cracked floor tiles: the step down into the family room drove me crazy... there wasn't really enough room for an island or decent sized kitchen table in the kitchen and there was tons of space in the family room but it was very awkward figuring out where to put the table Here is after the cosmetic renovation (actually, I took the pictures right before the whole thing got ripped out so that I could sell whatever I could on Craigslist): And after the complete renovation... notice the floors all on one level!!! yahoo!! and notice it is the same amount of space but opening it up makes it seem like much more space (also we eliminated the window on the range wall which helped immensely):...See Moregoldie locks
