please help me identify what these black ball-like things are on
Comments (3)Looks like aphids to me. I'd blast them with the hose, a hard stream but not hard enough to knock the leaves off. Do that every couple/few days for a week or so, soon the ones you'll miss should be noticed and eaten by a "good" bug. Once you see those (likely ladybug larvae) at work, let them do their work. Your ROS looks really close to the wall, but pics can be deceiving. Does the sun shine on it all day?...See MoreHelp, Window Replacements are Killing Me!
Comments (13)First off, thank you on the comments on the cost. I have never purchased windows before, and I just had no idea what was reasonable. When I looked at the big box stores, I saw windows for less than $200, so I wanted to get a second opinion. Secondly, none of the rooms in the basement will be sleeping quarters, at least not for a while. One of the old bedrooms is my office, the other was converted to all storage by the previous owners. The other rooms are the laundry room, and a large living area. There are two stairs to get into the basement. One at the front of the house, and another set at the back of the house (both IN the house). In 5-6 years we figure our son would like to move downstairs, and about the same time we will be redoing the storage room and bathroom to convert it back to a bedroom, and put in a full bath. I had a friend come out and look at the windows and give me a quick quote. Due to how the house was built, how close it is to the property lines, etc, it will be tough. One one side, if we put in a "proper egress window" we are looking at $7k-$10k, and it leaves about 6 inches between the window well and the sidewalk. On another side, he is afraid the well would go over the property line. In the front of the house, we would have to remove two 30yr old trees. If I was to only put one egress window in the office, living area, and the storage room, it would eat up about 1/3rd of our entire reno budget, which is just not an option at this time....See MoreLooking to replace existing window and need HELP!
Comments (19)My head is spinning, spoke w 3 companies today....all sales pitches, god help me! Interestingly enough the last guy was going to show us the composite stainable but was a totally scripted sales guy and we told him he had an 1 hr of our time he said he needed 1 1/2 hr and would come when we could get him it....suffice to say he left and he are not seeng but he left a brochure on the composite stainable window. The sad thing I would have like to learn more about it because it sounds like a good option for us. But me and my DH do not respond to cheesy sales guys. Homesealed: mentioned Interstate windows does that sound familiar? In any case I will research star mark and infinity, do you have any idea about prices on these windows, he said it would be more than vinyl but less than wood? Most of the windows are 36"x 60"....See MoreWhat are my options for Black / Dark Frame Replacement Windows?
Comments (14)We installed Milgard dark bronze aluminum in our modernist house a couple of years ago. They really do look black. We like the look, and they work well. As others have said, aluminum frames are not as energy efficient as other choices, but some vendors do have thermally broken frames to help. Ours do not have thermally broken frames. (For some unknown reason, Milgard did not offer them in California at the time.) You can put your finger on the frame and glass on a hot/cold day and certainly tell the difference in temperature. It is important to note that since aluminum is stronger than other choices, the frames are correspondingly thinner. So this mitigates some of the thermal concerns since there is less frame area and more glass area....See MoreDebbi Washburn
