Master Suite Design - Built-in wardrobe vs Walk-in closet
Comments (42)I totally agree with cpartist. You are really limiting yourself by staying in the footprint you made for yourself. Considering the investment you will make in the addition, I would want to do everything I could to make this room and possibly the laundry room/office work. I would also think about landscaping. Maybe your bedroom doesnt look to the patio because you move it to the back of the house, but you have succulents and cacti planted in front of the bedroom windows for a beautiful view. I'd start over with a fresh piece of paper and think about every option. I say this because I am doing a master suite addition to my house. I put a lot of thought into what I wanted. The people on this board also really helped me and I hired an architect. We came up with a great plan and will be starting this week on the project....See MoreNeed help with our Entrance/Mudroom/Stairs Layout
Comments (13)Hi all sorry for the delay in my reply! Thank you all very much for your input, sure made me think lots! We decided on Option 1. Keeping the door swing the way it is to promote natural flow from entrance to mudroom with coats, will also have some hooks by the door. Will likely add a small bulkhead between the entrance and dining room to create a feel of separation. The door is blocked nicely from our prevailing west wind by the garage (if the plan were a map, it would be upside down - north is at the bottom). I've also had some mixed feelings about not having the mudroom joined to my pantry and kitchen on the same side of the house, the concern being distance with groceries. For anyone who was curious, this is the full plan, the driveway comes up around the left side where the yellow line is, so this is why we've opted to have the 'public' rooms on this side of the house and the 'private' bedroom side on the back. That, and the views to the top and left of the page are quite nice so we've tried to orient our living spaces to face them. Comments (38)I am so sorry! Your last sentence breaks my heart for you. :( I just wrote a detailed reply - just to have it deleted. Grr. I have looked into this a little (I am not a builder or anything - just through Google) and it seems that many houses have a small step up (2-4 inches) into their house. Apparently it is to help keep weather from entering when the door is open. You have a porch, so this wouldn't be much of an issue BUT the point is: there can be a "mini" step up without it being a tripping hazard. Our home ( we rent ) has this and I have never even thought about it! The fact that there is a door frame, and usually different flooring, gives our brain the info it needs to understand. Does that make sense? Someone suggested something similar earlier in this conversation: build a step that is the same rise as the others you have (are there others? I can't tell from your photo). Make it wider than your front door (it will look better this way). Then the last inch or so will just be part of the natural step into your home. If you are skeptical, you could build a temporary one out of wood (a couple 2x6s would work), and try it. :) Anyway, I am praying (hope that is okay!) that you will see one thing every day (even if it is little) that you love about living in your new home - to help offset your frustration. Sincerely, C....See MoreDiningroom front and center when walking into a new home?
Comments (23)Thanks so much for all of the super constructive and smart feedback. The floorplan is already set in stone (house is 80% complete) but it hadn't occurred to me (dug) just to stop thinking of it as a dining room. haha. The two options I see with the most promise are: - As a study/office. I work from home and was planning to use one of the upstairs bedrooms but this could be a really nice alternative. Wall it off, add some glass doors maybe. Built-ins, warm it up with some texture... - As that welcoming foyer. Maybe add a little half-wall transition / break on either side to seperate the space. Imaging built-ins, a low round wooden table, cosy velvet chairs, pendant lighting. Would be less used perhaps but a really cosy place to read, have a glass of wine away from the TV in the living room - would give it a hotel vibe on entry. Still not sure it's the house for us but thinking about it this way really gives me a different set of ideas altogether....See MoreRachel Lee
