oral diseases? (help please)
Comments (7)I just came back from the doctor because of my mouth. I had some dental work done a month ago and had some places appear in my mouth the next week. The first thought was a reaction to what the new crown was made of but it was the same material as my other crowns. Then I thought it was a food allergy cause I had been eating strawberries and cantaloupe both are highly acidic. Anyway it would appear to be getting better with the mouth rinse the doctor prescribed but never went away. This week my tongue has been very sore and red on the sides. The doctor said it was STomatitis, which is an inflamation of the muscous lining of the mouth. She said some people are more prone to get it and it often shows up after dental work. She has given me another rinse with an antibotic in it. She said though that if I had WHITe spots on the areas that it would be Apthous ulcers and that that would be treated differently. From what the OP described that might be what you have. I strongly suggest you see the doctor as she said that it could become very painful. I know how mine hurts and its not that. I am not trying to diagonse your problem but found it coincidental that she mentioned it. Hope your problem is better by now....See MoreDo You Floss?
Comments (46)I never used to but have become a nightly flosser the last few years. As a child we took turns going to the dentist so of course, we ended up with lots of cavities and a big fear of dentist. My teeth are soft so I have so many fillings and over the years they have had to be replaced by crowns. I have 8 porcelin (SP?) veneers in the front top that cost me a bundle 10 years ago. As an adult I have always visited the dentist every 6 months but hated the cleanings. I now floss nightly and use an electric tooth brush but I do have to be careful with it not hurting my gums. I have so much metal in my mouth that I now have what the Oral surgeon said is a low electrical current that keeps the lining of my mouth very sensitive. I have dry mouth and if the balance of potassium, calicum and iron get a little off, my mouth breaks out in sores. I have managed to keep it under control with Biotene rinse and when needed a script from the dentist. I think preventive care has made such a difference in dental health. We were pretty poor and like with doctors, you didn't go unless there was a problem. Nowadays, kids go before they even have all their baby teeth....See MoreDental question about cleaning method
Comments (15)Periodontal disease is not contagious at least as far as anyone knows. That must have been an old wives tale at the time. They don't really know what causes it entirely though excellent oral hygiene (including flossing daily) and thorough dental cleanings supposedly prevent it. However I think there are hereditary factors and perhaps others too that are unknown. I've had excellent oral hygiene since I was a teenager and thorough cleanings and I still have recession and bone loss. Both my parents and my brother had advanced perio at a pretty young age so I think there's a hereditary factor. There is a condition known as "trench mouth" named such because soldiers in the trenches got it. It's a very acute form of gum disease and some thought that it can spread among people but you also need to have all the other factors including poor oral hygiene, stress, rundown, etc. It's also known as ANUG (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis)....See MoreMy poor gums
Comments (29)Here's another perspective to consider - from a former dental hygienist. I worked for a periodontist (gum specialist) right after I graduated from college. I found out I wasn't very skilled at removing subgingival calculus (tartar below the gumline) when I got out of school but I received excellent advanced training and experience working for the periodontist. What was most amazing was that many of the patients we saw had been having their teeth cleaned every six months their entire adult life but unfortunately they weren't being cleaned properly and many of these patients had advanced periodontal disease with bone loss as a result. Some cases were so advanced they lost one or more of their teeth. I moved and left that job and began working in a general dental practice. Unfortunately I found the same thing happening in the office where I worked. Other hygienists, who had not had the benefit of the additional experience I'd received in the perio office, were leaving calculus behind in difficult cases and patients were developing periodontal disease and bone loss. I'm sure I was the brutal hygienist removing the long neglected calculus that the other gentle hygienist left behind. I did however educate the patients about the situation (diplomatically because you don't want to give people a reason to sue the dentist for negligence) and let them know why the cleaning was "different" from what they had. Most were appreciative - some didn't like it and I'm sure requested the gentle hygienist. If I were you I would ask the dentist for more information about the health of your mouth and if there's a logical explanation for the situation. I would specifically ask if they did a full mouth probing and charting of periodontal pockets - if any. Find out if you have any periodontal pockets, bone loss, etc. Ask if you had a significant amount of subgingival calculus. Ask to see your records - HIPAA entitles you to have a copy. If there are no extenuating circumstances like this then it is quite possible the hygienist is a hack. However in my experience the more common type of incompetence is that the person just doesn't know how to do the job properly and thoroughly. Now that I'm out of the business and can't see people's work first hand I get my teeth cleaned at a perio office - just don't trust that the other folks really know what they're doing based on my previous experience. Or they may know but are on such a production schedule that they don't have time to do a thorough job. A lot of people would probably consider my current hygienist brutal. I'm willing to tolerate that to know that the job is being done right....See Morepetalique
