KitchenAid Arch Series II KBLC36FTS & other built-ins??
Comments (11)I would take the time to look at the KA, along with other Whirlpool Fridges (Jenn-air) for example. Most, if not all of these fridges use the same variable speed compressor (Whirlpool), that Jenn-air first came out with back around 2005. (But Double check that to be sure!!!) I'm not positive at this point that "ALL" the SZ's use this newer compressor as SZ tends to keep this type of info, Well Hidden, We do know that the SZ's that use the VSC use the Whirlpool compressor. So "most all" of these fridges are using the same "Guts" (compressor and controller board for it), so---- when you are paying that extra $1500 you are paying for ("extra fit and finish") and there is the "distinct possibility", you "Might" be paying for "Dated Technology" in some models of the SZ. You will be paying for 2 compressors in the case of SZ and I believe Miele. I have yet to taste ice cubes that taste like bacon or vice versa,(in any fridge) that I have had for the 50 or so years that I have owned fridges, so I have lived Nicely, all my life with single compressor fridges. You will see where folks claim that the produce last longer with the SZ's and Liebherrs "Biofresh", but you will also see the same type of comments from posters with single compressor fridges (Jenn-Air) for example. I think the reason for the produce lasting longer (along with some of the other "Magical attributes") of the dual compressors, is more likely due to the better insulation the newer fridges have along with the better and more even and consistent temp control--(Jenn-air, I believe, is claiming +/- half a degree (F) temp accuracy in their new ones,) and I have seen others claim at least +/- 1 degree (F). So big thing is, "Most all" have the same "Whirlpool guts",(Not positive about Liebherr). See if you really think the fit and finish and other "Xtras" are worth the xtra money. Back in 2006 when I bought my Jenn-air, it was much better lit inside, it had the adjustable shelves with crank handles, it had digital readouts for 3 areas of the fridge (each individually adjustable) along with another digital readout and control for the freezer. Back then SZ had none of this. It had Huge Gills showing at the top, and add the fact that Consumer Reports rated the SZ dead last for reliability and Jenn-air #1 for reliability made it an easy decision for me. Now fast forward 5 years, Jenn-air still quiet, efficient, and completely trouble free, plus back in 2006 I pocketed about a $4000 savings. Unfortunately Jenn-air is not the bargain it was back in 2006 as Whirlpool bought Jenn-air, and Price fixed it, like Miele and SZ, deciding to make it "High end" by increasing its price, close to that of SZ and Miele--- OH well, At Least Miele and SZ were first at that, even thou it took them a bit longer to compete "Technically" Good luck on your decision!! Comments (23)Well, this one is a longshot, Daven. You do not mention which model Samsung you have, but there are about 50 Samsung refrigerator control boards on ebay for sale right now ranging in price from $45 to about $200. So you may not be looking at quite the expense you anticipate. However -- and this is a big however -- the logic board may not be the real problem. The fault could be induced by a secondary peripheral issue, a bad motor, shorting wire in the harness, etc. That is why I hesitate to recommend a simple logic board swapout unless you can definitely isolate the problem to the board alone, either through a thorough diagnostic check, or by symptom matching, e.g., known problem, high failure rate component, well-documented symptoms, and a high probability fix. Anyway, this may be TMI for you if you are certain you want to simply replace the unit, and who could blame you for that? It's just that there is no panacea brand to recommend. For instance, I have had great luck with our LG, but the reports from people who have had failures with them are atrocious. For that reason I could not recommend an LG, even though ours has been great. antss's recommendation of a subzero is right on the money, if you can afford it. You get the best quality but it costs thousands more. In the end I think any brand you buy has the potential to break. If you do buy a new unit, perhaps you should look at an extended warranty for it. (Shop around for that, Square Trade has a good reputation and may prove cheaper than a store-offered extended warranty. Best of luck and sorry about your fridge troubles....See MoreKitchenAid Refrigerators? Good or Bad?
Comments (20)We purchased two KitchenAid appliances last year: a dishwasher and a low profile over the range microwave. While we haven't had any problems with the low profile microwave and like it, at 10 months the KitchenAid dishwasher had a problem where it wasn't draining. It was still under warranty so we called for warranty repair. The repairman said it was a drain motor issue. He mentioned he had seen this issue with other KitchenAid dishwashers. One month later, we still don't have the new part and don't have the use of the dishwasher. While I like the huge capacity of the dishwasher and the third Flex Rack, it is disappointing that an appliance less than one year old would have such a problem. We didn't have one service call for our 10 year old Kenmore dishwasher that we replaced. I probably wouldn't consider KitchenAid appliances in the future....See MoreBest large capacity refrigerator/freezer with external dispenser
Comments (10)There is no drain there. Just a tiny reservoir to catch some overflow. If you don’t police it regularly, the next time you go to open the door, the centrifugal force will cause the water to leave the reservoir if it’s more than a teaspoon or two. Plus kids. Plus inattentive spouses. If you want a dispenser on a fridge, you also buy the extra maintenance and repairs that go with it. The ice maker is the #1 service call on any refrigerator brand anywhere. A built in is designed to be sleek and unobtrusive. Or invisible. Having a giant dispenser in a door defeats that. That’s why there are no 12K fridges with dispensers. At that level, it is s totally separate appliance. In the Butler’s pantry. Or bar. Or beverage sink in the kitchen. Just not at the clean up sink or prep sink. You don’t want the traffic underfoot interfereing with those functions. In a smaller, less grand, kitchen, the plain Jane standard 36” fridge dispenser is fine. It’s what you expect. Not in a 150K kitchen....See MoreRita
