Should I hire a paint color consultant? (pic)
Comments (30)Oh, wow, I came to update, and was surprised any of you were interested. I'm still in a dither, this time afraid I should have gotten a white sofa, and not able to decide on fabrics for the rest of the upholstered furniture. The Ellen Kennon paint colors are: Living Room: Tulip Leaves, Peridot or Spring Green. Kitchen and Dining Room: Citrine, Sunshine, Buttercup, or Buttercream. I ordered a Bradington-Young Yorba sofa in a light tan (Surreal Masson). I was going to switch to an off-white leather this morning, but they finished cutting the leather right before I called. My leather is a shade or two lighter than this, but the color of what I bought is nothing like the swatch I have: The loveseat, chair, and ottoman I ordered are these (Jessica Charles): I chose the chair because it is big enough to fit my husband. He wanted the H&M Austin High Back Tilt Back w/ottoman -- but it looked like a huge squatting toad. I haven't selected fabric for the Jessica Charles furniture yet. There are two I like, but I think they'd look better with a white sofa *and* I don't think they'd look good with the green wall colors the consultant advised me to try. If I painted the living room Citrine, it might work. OTOH, maybe the fabric would look awful with the sofa. I am going this weekend to visit my mother for 10 days, so I had a couple dozen more fabric samples sent to her house. I'm bringing my set of Ellen Kennon paint chips and all the fabric samples I have, plus my leather swatch. My biggest problem, besides fearing I made a big mistake in not getting an off-white sofa, is that I like two color schemes equally well and cannot decide what to do: #1 is spring green and soft yellow, with blue accents #2 is a medium mossy green and off-white, with soft yellow accents. I think I made a big mistake when I chose the sofa color. Now I have to figure out what to do about it. It looks fine with the Ellen Kennon paint colors the consultant suggested, though. Hopefully, I'll make a fabric decision very soon, because I've already spent 4 months dithering about this. Green (except for dark green) is my favorite color, so it has to stay in the mix. ......See MoreDecorator to Pick Paint Colors -- Worth It?
Comments (14)Well, it's always the proverbial crapshoot hiring a decorator but here are some guidelines: Refs (3 minimum) and a photo portfolio of clients and her/his OWN home. I like to see someone who can decorate in any style and doesn't have a "signature" look or one who pays much attention to trends. I would want to see that skill within a portfolio. Proof is in the pudding. CALL refs...don't just get a list! Ask how long it took, how she/he worked, did they LISTEN, etc. Results???? One problem I can see is that a decorator isn't going to have the opportunity to see your home during the different stages of the day with light constantly changing.....or during the different seasons. This is one reason I usually wait until mid-summer to choose paints. Our homes are darkest with the sun at it's highest point so it will only get lighter and brighter as we move closer to fall and winter. If you paint now( with darker shades) you might be looking at a cave come spring. I also like to live in a house a bit before choosing paints...especially more dramatic tones. Paints not only should be seen during daylight, but under incandescent lighting at night before being chosen...especially greens, beiges and golds. Many of those can pick up some nasty "greeney" tones with that lighting. So when choosing paints? Drag in some lamps and try and duplicate the lighting that you will have. Put them on boxes or whateva if you don't have furniture in the house yet. Lastly? I think that billing rate seems a bit high but certainly ask the decorator how the process goes, how long it normally takes "etc". Also... if the decorator doesn't bring her OWN fandecks but leaves you with a list of paint numbers? Don't go there. That's a MINIMAL investment than anyone worth their salt makes. What shades are you considering btw? It sounds as if with antiques and Persians that warmer colors would be a good direction. Comments (3)I've never worked with F&B paints -- I have the paint deck (not really -- a pamphlet, maybe?) but there isn't a dealer in our state and I've been able to get what I want with other paints so ... that's my disclosure. But I totally know what you mean about having a vanilla house and wanting to give it character. Ours is a 1997 b-i-g house in a planned community -- love the neighborhood, the schools, and have made the house as "ours" as it can be. We had our textured walls smoothcoated: drywallers did it and it looks and feels like plaster because that's essentially what it is -- three coats of thin compound just put atop the textured finish. No sanding. Not messy. Just right. We also had miles of trim put up -- crown, skirting, picture frame, casing on some doors / windows (but not all). Just those have made a WORLD of difference! Everyone's lighting is different but I think the color you want for your walls is a really creamy white, with a lot of yellow in it. If you want and can afford to work with F&B then that's super -- more than half the battle is done. But you can also look at less expensive and perhaps more readily available lines. I'm keen on both Benjamin Moore and Pratt & Lambert. The trim throughout our house is BM's Calming Cream, which on the chip looks like a pale yellow but up everywhere it's the creamiest, dreamiest white. Love it and would use it again in a heartbeat. Calming Cream I know the color you like for your cabs, but have you also looked at BM's Paris Rain? Some of the pics of it online make it look rather green but in my real life (given the lighting conditions in this part of the continent) it is a beautiful, subtle grey-green, or green-grey. I have one color down, Cheyenne Green, on our mantle. I love it. I just love it. When I describe it I say "sludge green" and that's just right. It's really earthy, subtle. Perfect. Paris Rain Cheyenne Green For your trim could you go one or two shades darker than your wall color? I'll have to check my sample decks later to see if I can find a color, but I love that almost-taupe color with a creamy wall, like maybe midway between the cabinet green and the wall, but with no green in it. You're going to have so much fun!...See Moreppg paint worth the money?
