Best Lights for Inside Kitchen Cabinets

We are currently remodeling our kitchen with white shaker inset cabinets. Some of our upper cabinets will have glass fronts, and we would like to add some lights to these. What are the best kind of lights to add? Should I go with hardwired LED puck lights or strips?

I used hardwired recessed lights in my kitchen this way they lay flat against the cabinet top with trim.

My electrician is using the lighting division in our kitchen. He says he loves the look and what good quality lights they are.

Certainly there is pre-wiring that you can do and you'd be wise to do so. First you'll need to figure out what type of lighting to employ as the type of cable varies depending on weather you need line voltage or low voltage. Many people are using LED lighting. It's low voltage, produces almost no heat and is very energy efficient. It's what we used for the undercabinet setup in our recent renovation. Here's a shot or two. You're probably best off asking these questions on the lighting forum. The folks over there are very knowlegable and helpful. Good Luck.

Not knowing anything more about your cabinets than you have described, i.e., a 1" recess, I would probably do as you described with a filler. I would feel comfortable screwing into a solid wood face frame, less so into a 1/2" particle board side panel. Use flat-head screws, drill a pilot hole and countersink and they should be unnoticeable from either top or bottom.

Some recommendations are listed here. Personally I think strip lights give a more "full" appearance as since they evenly distribute the light. Also, as Joe T. said, definitely stick with LED!

calidesign just wanted to say a BIG thank you! We have decided to go with painting our kitchen cabinets taupe. We didn't think of that color on our own, it didn't even cross my mind, so thank you so much! I've already spoken to the cabinet guy and painter. This is the general idea I'm leaning towards. I'm going to have 2 different decorative tiles around the kitchen area (fireplace & bathroom) so I'm going to keep the back splash a solid color. Thanks again!

I don't know how many lights you need... you can buy them as a set or individually, get the ones with a J-Box but make sure the box is small enough to fit through the hole in the cabinet for access if you plan to close up the soffit.
