Installing Formica Countertop With Uneven Walls
Comments (8)Durabond 90 is just a type of drywall mud. It's not to difficult to use. It normally comes in a bag but you can find premixed stuff as well. The easiest way for a beginner would be to put thin coats until you get the wall staightened out. If you put to much it can make for alot of sanding and you'll prob need to sand between coats a little since your a beginner. This also depends on how far out your wall is. Hopefully it's not out to much as mud tends to crack when to thick, durabond 90 resists this cracking well though. Your gonna wanna build the mud slightly thicker than what you need and then sand it smooth and staight. Don't over sand the edges as you can tear the drywall up. You want the edges to kind of fade in, the best check for a good job is just run your hand across and check the smoothness. Also lights from lots of different angles can help see spots as well. Hope this helps. Drywall mud is not the easiest thing in the world but you can always sand it off or add more....See MoreWaterfall counter and cabinet gap
Comments (25)The contractor definitely has to do something better than the silicone hack. A piece of matching thin trim would of been much better than that. Good grief. Please post closeup pictures of that gap from floor to top with measure tape. Then measure in middle & measure at bottom. How much of a difference is it? If you have a 90 degree square & long level...then you can get the proof you need to hopefully get the needed fixes. Take photos with level & square in hand. Then show proof & discuss facts with installers. It will be hard to make up excuses with measuring tools & level photos. Hold a long level up against countertop vertically to check how level it is vertically. Then check level on top of countertop to check horizontally. Then check level of floor in that area. Then a 90 degree square to check floor to countertop square angle. There may be a reason as to why it is the way it is that will become apparent after more investigation. Btw, as Tatiana asked, the installers may have left a gap for the base cabinet door to open without hitting waterfall out. A lot of cabinets would need this to open. OP mentioned they did not need clearance due to adjustable hinges. (I would double check that really good.) I wonder if the countertop fabricator may not have known they could be as tight on the end, so they went the safer route & left gap for door opening space to prevent possible cabinet hinderance door issues. Thinking the cabinet installer would just fill it later with filler or scribe molding. For future waterfall clients, if want really tight edge, it's usually a safer choice to avoid doors opening towards countertop edge, instead do drawers or panels on ends of waterfall countertop ends....See MoreAcceptable work on Arctic White quartz counter?
Comments (14)The quality is not top notch , for sure. Looks to be builder grade fabrication and install. Which brings in the question price point of the job and source for the product and labor. Budget builders have different standards that are handled by high production, mediocre quality, shops. Builders are about low cost and speed, not quality. For a higher precision homeowner quality job, gaps at walls of 1/8”- 3/16” and a bit of color variance at a small 1/16” seam is within industry standards. A poor color match repair and a chipped seam isn’t. Larger gaps than 3/16” at the back and wall isn’t acceptable unless this run is bound in between two fixed points that do not allow maneuvering. Builder level jobs have higher tolerances for gaps and seams than do a top notch homeowner grade job. If they can fix that color match chip and seam acceptably, the gaps at the out of square side wall are manageable. A backsplash will cover to the rear. And a bit of a float out in the crooked wall will deal with the side area if no splash is planned for that....See MoreIs this an acceptable gap between a quartz counter and fridge panel?
Comments (13)The side splash is 3 cm thick and appears to be of a different slab/year (the veining is less white and less crisp/no small veins). Can it be milled thinner? Every inch counts in this kitchen. Black caulk might look better, am concerned about the fridge panel getting damaged at this point. And the bead of caulk doesn’t extend the inch past the cabinets/sits on the white cabinet. Photo of the other side for context. I am paying nearly $3000 for a 8x9” galley. MSI marquina midnight. We thought we might tile the backsplash eventually so asked for scribed to the wall as though we’d do no backsplash to give us the most options. Also, MSI minimum radius is 3/8.” Sink is still a little offset from cutout, silicone seeping out, cut areas a bit duller finish than gloss areas)....See MoreMelissa R
