Fixing This Dark, Dreary, Fake Tuscan Kitchen

I recently bought a new house and thought that I would be able to tolerate the awful color scheme of this kitchen. However, every day that passes a little piece of my soul disappears so I am thinking changes are needed sooner rather than later.

As this won't be my forever home (2 years at the most) I need suggestions as to how I can make some relatively cheap and quick improvements. I'm thinking cabinet resurfacing, new backsplash and new countertops only (a new stainless fridge is on the way next week). Replacing the floor tiles would be a last resort so assuming they were to remain in place, what can I do with this mess without dropping $20K on a complete remodel?
