Why is my wood looking like it is wet and oil stained?

We have an 1887 victorian home. There is an old coal shed (emptied of coal) in the unfinished basement. The back wall is open with 2 x 4'x is open. The 2 x 4's feel oily and moist and appear darker in areas, but there is no scent at all of oil or chemical etc. We have checked for leakage and spillage but have found nothing to indicate a chronic leak somewhere. This has been there for quite a while. I have put chalk to see if it is spreading and not sure but think it may be slowly. Can anyone give me any ideas of what this could be, maybe an old spill from prior owners? Is it something to worry about? The wood in those areas is soft on the outside but a fork cannot penetrate more than the tip of the fork.
